Mathematical notation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mathematical notation is used in mathematics, and throughout the physical sciences, engineering, and economics.
The notation uses symbols or symbolic expressions which are intended to have a precise semantic meaning.
For example, if the symbols represent numbers, the expressions are evaluated according to a conventional order of operations which provides for calculation, if possible, of any expressions within parentheses, followed by any multiplications and divisions done from left to right, finally any additions or subtractions done from left to right.

Table of mathematical symbols - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
In mathematics, a set of symbols is frequently used in mathematical expressions.
As mathematicians are familiar with these symbols, they are not explained each time they are used.
Be aware that, in some cases, different symbols have the same meaning, and the same symbol has, depending on the context, different meanings.

 MathML Conference 2002: Presentations
A special-purpose recognizer is necessary to be able to work with mathematics, as the two-dimensional layout and use of a large number of symbols of multiple sizes --from small to very large-- makes mathematical handwriting just as similar to drawing as it is to normal handwriting.
This is not the case, however, for mathematics where the symbols are arranged in a two-dimensional structure and the spatial relationship between the symbols has embedded mathematical meaning.
However, a symbol is input at the stroke level, and it is not trivial to segment strokes into symbols.

 Characters, Entities and Fonts
Many letter-like symbols may be quickly interpreted by specialists in a given area as of a certain mathematical type: for instance, bold symbols, whether based on Latin or Greek letters, as vectors in physics or engineering, or fraktur symbols as Lie algebras in part of pure mathematics.
A proposal to facilitate mathematical publishing by inclusion of mathematical alphabetic symbols in the UCS was made, and has been favorably handled.
The exact correspondence between a mathematical alphabetic character and an unstyled character is complicated by the fact that certain characters that were already present in Unicode are not in the 'expected' sequence.

 MATHEMATICAL SYMBOLS
The difference of any two symbols, a being the greater and b being the smaller, is written a -b.
The sum of any number of like symbols, such as a+ a + a + a, may be combined and written once, preceded by a numeral designating the number of times the symbol occurs, as 4a.
The quotient of any two symbols a and b where a is the dividend and b is the divisor maybe written a/b.

The symbol itself is properly called a lemniscus, a latin name which means "pendant ribbon" and was first used in 1694 by Jacob Bernoulli (1654-1705) to describe a planar curve now called the Lemniscate of Bernoulli.
Before Halmos had the idea to use the symbol in a mathematical context, it was widely used to mark the end of an article in popular magazines (it still is).

She writes that the non-raised dot as a symbol for multiplication appears in all the letters of 1698, and earlier, and, according to the same edition, it already appears in a letter by Johann Bernoulli to Leibniz dated September, 2nd 1694 (see vol.
However Johnson only used the symbol to indicate fractions (for example three-fourths was written 3:4); he did not use the symbol for division "dissociated from the idea of a fraction" (Cajori vol.

The symbols of elementary arithmetic are almost wholly algebraic, most of them being transferred to the numerical field only in the 19th century, partly to aid the printer in setting up a page and partly because of the educational fashion then dominant of demanding a written analysis for every problem.
