		Tables of trigonometric functions were first known to be made by Hipparchus, and were used up until the 1980s when calculators included this functionality.
		Tables of common logarithms and antilogarithms were used to do rapid multiplications, divisions, and exponentiations, including the extraction of nth roots.
		The use of tables of values of the cumulative distribution function of the normal distribution remains commonplace today, especially in schools.

		The Handbook of Mathematical Functions with Formulas, Graphs, and Mathematical Tables [1] was the culmination of a quarter century of NBS work on core mathematical tools.
		From 1938 until 1946, 37 volumes of the NBS Math Tables Series were issued, containing tables of trigonometric functions, the exponential function, natural logarithms, probability functions, and related interpolation formulae.
		In 1947, the Math Tables Project was moved to Washington to form the Computation Laboratory of the new National Applied Mathematics Laboratories of NBS.

		The present volume is an outgrowth of a Conference on Mathematical Tables held at Cambridge, Mass., on September 15-16, 1954, under the auspices of the National Science Foundation and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
		The table on page 7 has been revised to give the values of physical constants obtained in a recent reevaluation; and pages 6 and 8 have been modified to reflect changes in definition and nomenclature of physical units and in the values adopted for the acceleration due to gravity in the revised Potsdam system.
		To provide technical guidance to the Mathematics Division of the Bureau, which carried out the work, and to provide the NSF with independent judgments on grants for the work, the Conference Committee was reconstituted as the Committee on Revision of Mathematical Tables of the Mathematics Division of the National Research Council.

	A Short History of Mathematical Function Tables
		They found that solutions for some important physical problems--like the orbital motion of planets, the oscillatory motion of suspended chains, and the calculation of the gravitational potential of nearly spherical bodies--could not always be described in a closed form using only elementary functions.
		Large tables with numerical values for the special functions also began to appear, along with three-dimensional "graphs" made of wood or plaster--masterpieces of precision sculpting--showing the behavior of functions such as P and the Jacobi functions.
		In 1857, the Scheutzes produced a mechanically generated table of common logarithms to five decimal places for the integers from 1 to 10,000; each value took about thirty seconds to calculate.

		I find the most useful sections are the table of integrals, derivatives, trig identities, geometric formulae, physical constants, and unit conversions (all lists are quite complete).
		Here I would like to answer why tables and formulas are needed in a day when hand computers are everywhere.
		The answer is that we have to learn to think in terms of tables and formulas to keep at the top of our fields (for example, how many of you know that general relativity is based on sets of tables called tensors?).
