Mark Latham - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Latham was Leader of the Labor Party for 13 months, the shortest leadership of any of the party's federal leaders since Billy Hughes was expelled from the party in 1916.
He was only the second federal Labor Leader, after Mathew Charlton in 1928, to leave politics without ever having held ministerial office.
Political journalist Mungo McCallum wrote: "[Latham] became leader too early in his career, he lacked the skills needed to deal with the webs of intrigue within his own party, he refused to massage the media and the advisers he did listen to were out of their depth against Howard's praetorian guard.

In the founding affidavit lodged at court - before the liquidation application was withdrawn - Harry Mathew Charlton, the chief financial officer of parliament, stated that the respondent "is lawfully indebted to the applicant in a capital sum of R2 639 180, exclusive of interest."
Charlton says that the claim represents the amount by which the respondent "has incorrectly invoiced the applicant in respect of unauthorised and/or bogus travel expenses and which the applicant has paid to the respondent for the period February 2002 to June 2003."
The original application sought an order placing the respondent under provisional liquidation on the basis that it cannot pay its debts.
