 UNF Library: John E. Mathews, Jr. Collection - Biography
Mathews was a life-long resident of Jacksonville, Florida, where he was born on June 20, 1920, to Alice Schumpert Mathews.
His father, John E. Mathews, Sr., was a constitutional lawyer and, in later years, a Florida state legislator and Chief Justice of the 1955 Florida Supreme Court.
The Mathews Bridge in Jacksonville is named in his honor, after his success in leading the way for construction funding.

The 1,017-ft bridge is a two-hinged steel arch with a clear span from center to center of skewback hinges of 977.6 ft. Built to accommodate four railroad tracks, it was designed for a total live and dead load of 76,000 lb per lineal foot.
While the nearby Triborough Bridge was constantly being maintained and repainted, the Hell Gate Bridge had not been painted since it opened in 1916, except by the skillful hands of graffiti artists.
Since the bridge was deemed structurally sound by Amtrak president W. Graham Claytor, Jr., he saw little need for spending money for "cosmetic purposes." Buttressed by a 1991 article in The New Yorker on what Moynihan called "a great engineering miracle," Congress appropriated $55 million to repair and refurbish the Hell Gate Bridge.

JACKSONVILLE - A dock worker on Saturday found the body of a woman who was thrown from her Jeep Wrangler and fell 150 feet into the St. Johns River after a traffic accident on the Mathews Bridge.
Campbell, 46, of Hilliard was driving east Thursday night on the bridge when she lost control of the Jeep on a wet metal grating.
Police say there have been at least 281 accidents on the bridge in the past year, and some claim its metal grating makes it a dangerous place to drive.
