Mathias GrUnewald[mAtE´As grUn´uvAlt] Pronunciation Key, c.1475–1528, German painter of religious subjects.
GrUnewald's earliest work of certain date is the Mocking of Christ of 1503 (Munich), a linear, energetic and colorful painting in which the blindfolded figure of Jesus is beaten by a group of grotesque men.
This work incorporates a number of stylistic components that GrUnewald employed in his later works: the dramatic use of silhouette and unusual color; the striking contrast of light with shadowed areas, called chiaroscuro; and the exaggeration and distortion of the human form.

GRÜNEWALD, MATHIAS [Grünewald, Mathias], c.1475-1528, German painter of religious subjects.
Although he assimilated various compositional elements of three other great German masters (Schongauer, Dürer, and Cranach), he is unique in expressive power and in the visionary revelation of spiritual drama.
Other of his crucifixion scenes are in Basel, Karlsruhe, and Washington, D.C. Although Grünewald's vision was almost unrelentingly terrible, the Karlsruhe crucifixion, completed in about 1525 and apparently his last work, incorporates a new heroism and restraint.

The figures on the left mourn the death of the human body of Christ and John the Baptist points to Jesus Christ as the Savior of mankind.
The sheep in the right foreground is probably a symbol of "The Lamb of God", and the background space is dark referring to the Biblical darkness on the hill of Golgotha.
Matthias Grunewald uses the heavily highlighted Mary figure as a starting point compositionally, moving the viewer's eye in a circular rotation around the composition.

A later race of critics, declining to accept the statements of Waagen and Passavant, affirm that there is no documentary evidence to connect Grunewald with the pictures of Halle and Annaberg, and they quote Sandrart and Bernhard Jobin of Strassburg to show that Grunewald is the painter of pictures of a different class.
They prove that he finished before 1516 the large altar-piece of Issenheim, at present in the museum of Colmar, and starting from these premises they connect the artist with Altdorfer and Diirer to the exclusion of Cranach.
The altarpiece of Issenheim is a fine and powerful work, completed as local records show before 1516 by a Swabian, whose distinguishing mark is that he followed the traditions of Martin Schongauer, and came under the influence of Altdorfer and Durer.

In the presentation of the Crucifix depicted by Grunewald he reveals to the on-looker that the death of Christ imitates ordinary human death.
He did not have the consciousness that he was painting the great Mystery of the Sacrifice of the Son of God in the form of a man, as Orthodox iconographers would.

Grünewald apparently married about 1519, but the marriage does not appear to have brought him much happiness (at least, that is the tradition recorded in the 17th century).
Grunewald occasionally added his wife's surname, Neithardt, to his own, thereby accounting for several documentary references to him as Mathis Neithardt or Mathis Gothardt Neithardt.

Grunewald married a young woman who converted from Judaism for the occasion, but the marriage may have been intended to obscure the painter's great interest in male bodies.

Mathis der Maler means Mathias the Painter and the work (originally an opera) was inspired by the religious paintings of Mathias Grunewald, who died in 1528.
In a pre-concert lecture the conductor, Victor Yampolsky, circulated among his audience pictures of these paintings: the Angels' Concert, depicting Madonna and child; the Entombed Christ, with a particularly grim version of the Crucifixion; and the Temptation of Saint Anthony, with the saint being tormented by the demons of Hell.
The three movements were inspired by paintings by the German artist, Mathias Grünewald.

The visionary and irrational aspect of Grunewald's art, rooted in the medieval world, is one of many echoes of the past that were to repeat themselves many times in the subsequent development of German art.
Both Durer and Grunewald had to contend personally with the spiritual and intellectual foment caused by the Protestant Reformation, which, although of profound religious and social consequence, produced no characteristic form of artistic expression.
So personal had been Durer's involvement with southern Renaissance ideals, that no established school or tradition developed in his wake.

Thus, we find in Josten's music a curious combination of solid formal constructive principle and contrapuntal technique together with relish for rich harmonic texture and a range of instrumental timbre and color.
Concerto Sacro I-II was, in the composer's words, “originally conceived as one Concerto in four movements.” Like Paul Hindemith's masterpiece of a decade later, Mathis der Maler, the Josten's Concerto Sacro was also inspired by the great Mathias Grunewald Isenheim Altar triptych at Colmar, Alsace.
The Josten Concerto Sacro is scored for strings, plus a piano obbligato that both reinforces the harmonic bass, somewhat after the manner of the baroque continue, and also provides, from time to time, dramatic commentary at crucial points of the musical narrative.

One of the two Expressionist movements was Die Brucke (The Bridge), which emerged in Germany early in the 20th century.
The artists found inspiration from their predecessors like Van Gogh, Ensor, Munch, Goya, El Greco and Mathias Grunewald and as far back as primitive art.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner played a prominent role in the Die Brucke, and insisted that the artists all expressed with their inner convictions sincerely and spontaneously.
