 William Mathias
Mathias was born in Whitland in 1934 and his untimely death in 1992 robbed Wales of one of her finest composers at the height of his powers.
Mathias was always particularly concerned to communicate clearly in musical terms and it may indeed be that one of his most enduring achievements was to embrace a perceived lingua franca whilst retaining his individuality - and this despite the impression of an eclectic musical surface.
When Mathias decided to revive and revise it for performance and publication in 1976 he found that he only needed to adapt some matters of instrumental layout in the finale and that the work could happily stand as it was.
