 Mathieu Kassovitz
Kassovitz's most celebrated feature, 1995's La Haine (Hate in the U.S.), generated both critical exaltation and a burst of resentful recognition for its portrayal of racial tensions in Paris.
As someone equally comfortable in front of and behind the camera, Kassovitz seemed to have a long and plentiful career ahead of him, or at least a legacy as one of the most vital members of the French film industry of the '90s.
Eschewing the lens in favor of the director's chair for the 2000 thriller Crimson Rivers, Kassovitz teamed with French stars Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel for the tale of a pair of detectives investigating a gruesome series of murders committed on the campus of a remote mountain college.

Mathieu Kassovitz was born on the 3rd April 1967 in Paris into a family of filmmakers.
Kassovitz replaces the bleu, blanc, rouge of the tricolore with the beur, blanc, `fl' of the banlieues.
Kassovitz is not so much interested in inter-racial violence - this is only touched upon briefly as part of a broader antagonism between young banlieusards and the police - but on a specific class (or underclass) and generation.

Mathieu is, in fact, the son of Peter Kassovitz, the photographer and filmmaker.
Still, Mathieu can certainly relate, making his Jewish character a surrogate along the lines of “under other circumstances, this could have been me.” After all, Mathieu`s father is a Hungarian immigrant, and French anti-Semitism runs deep.
Kassovitz isn`t after a complex understanding of the pop-off situation—the point of violence—that he, unlike Lee, so closely and admirably describes.
