  Benin RISE TO POWER
Mathieu Kérékou first attracted public attention as the commander of a paratroop unit that played an important role in the 1967 coup that overthrew General Soglo.
Although a key player and later chairman of the Revolutionary Military Council (1967–68), which was responsible for organizing the coup, Kérékou did not assume a cabinet position in the subsequent government of President Alley.
During the first round of the 2001 elections, which began with 17 candidates, allegations of fraud, including the disappearance of opposition ballots and padded voter registration lists by Kérékou followers, led to a boycott of the run-off poll by the main opposition candidates.

COTONOU, 7 Apr 2006 (IRIN) - Bucking a regional trend towards constitutional revision and chaotic political successions, Benin’s long-serving ruler Mathieu Kerekou at midnight on Wednesday observed the constitutional age limit and ceded the presidency to Boni Yayi, in a bow to democracy.
Fittingly for a man who ran his country through different ideologies, Kerekou’s motto was “the stick cannot break in the arms of a chameleon”.
Kerekou’s adherence to the constitution and his successful engineering of a peaceful succession is made all the more remarkable given the often less than democratic norm in the region.

How to reconnect with the young people? - Interview with François Woukoache
In 1996, when the results of the second round of the presidential election were declared and Mathieu Kérékou's unimaginable victory became a reality, Nicéphore Soglo seemed to hesitate as to whether or not he ought to accept the bitter verdict.
But the key to success came primarily from the fact the the Beninese people clearly perceived that, in their march towards democracy, they necessarily had to accept a transition period in which the different political forces would reconcile and learn to build the foundations of a new society together.
If Nicéphore Soglo was able to complete his mandate (1991-1996), if Mathieu Kérékou has lasted without being a danger to democracy, it is largely due to the presidential regime which the Beninese had the inspiration to set up in their Republic.

While Kerekou himself was silent on the matter, many people suspected he wanted to amend the constitution because some of his advisors went on national television to justify the need for such a change.

Voters in the west African nation of Benin voted peacefully for a new president to replace long-serving President Mathieu Kerekou on Sunday, in run-off polls overshadowed by last minute confusion.
As a result many voters were informed only late on Saturday that the poll was to be held, and the electoral commission had to rush ballot papers across the country.
International monitors pronounced the first round broadly free and fair, despite warnings of fraud from Kerekou, who has ruled Benin for 30 of the past 34 years but who at 72 is considered too old to stand for re-election.

In the first decade after independence in 1960 it was ruled by a succession of military leaders until Major Mathieu Kerekou seized power in 1972 and gradually restored civilian rule.
Before being colonised by France towards the end of the 1800s, the area comprised several independent states, including the Kingdom of Dahomey, which had a well-trained standing army and was geared towards the export of slaves and later palm oil.
However, during the 1980s Mr Kerekou resigned from the army to become a civilian head of state and liberalised the economy.
