Mati's works came to express the spirit of a whole generation of musicians ranging from the late Jerry Garcia to the equally late, great Eric Dolphy.

 Mati Klarwein, Alex Grey
Klarwein was able to capture the multi-colored iridescent visions and patterns of the inner worlds demonstrating what an experienced psychonaut and fanatically disciplined painter he was.
Mati was born in 1930 in Hamburg, Germany and his Jewish parents escaped the Nazis by moving to Palestine in 1934.
I was thrilled to finally meet Mati in 1994 and glad to know that he appreciated my work and felt a fellowship with so many of the younger visionary artists whom he inspired.

Mati Klarwein—the name he reverted to after this incident, and which was given him by his German parents—has always been acutely sensitive to the age-old standoffs between fl and white, Muslim and Christian, science and art, nature and technology.
Mati met Jon Hassell, whose own experiments with atmosphere, trumpet manipulation and textural freeplay was beginning to water the bleached deserts left by the battlescapes of cosmic jazz.
Klarwein has published several books of his writings over the years, and it's a medium he increasingly enjoys: "A picture might be worth a thousand words but a good sentence is worth a thousand windows," he says.

 cityofsound: Mati Klarwein RIP
Artist Mati Klarwein, creator of legendary covers for Miles Davis, Santana, Jon Hassall and others, has died aged 70.
Mati was a great man and his daughter will carry on that soft excellence through this heropass.
I knew Mati in the late 70s and early 80s when I was bumming around in Deia, but while I always admired his painting, it was only through music that I had any close contact with him.

Mati Klarwein - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mati Klarwein (April 9, 1932 – March 7, 2002) was a painter best known for his works used on the covers of music albums.
His family was of Jewish origin and fled to Palestine when he was two years old after the rise of Nazi Germany.
Klarwein is still best known for his art of the 1960s and 1970s, with its clear links to surrealism (Klarwein studied with the Viennese Fantastic Realist Ernst Fuchs), popular psychedelic imagery, and religious art from a number of different traditions.

RV: Well, Andy Warhol's Factory was just around the corner from Mati Klarwein's 17th Street loft, where I first started my oil painting studies, so we would have many visits and conversations with Andy and his surreal circus of characters.
Everybody who was somebody came to visit Mati at the loft, and some of the people I met there included Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Buddy Miles, Tim Leary, Peter Beard, Jackie Kennedy, Huntington Hartford, Vali, Ferro, Andy Warhol and his 'Factory', Richard Gere, and everyone else of interest at that time.
Sadly, Mati passed away in 2002, and will sorely be missed by many, especially those of us who had the pleasure of his company and friendship.

Surrealist and Visionary Art by Mati Klarwein - psychedelic art
Although this is the style of art that Mati is best known for, it is also the hardest to classify.
Even though these paintings contain many surrealist elements, and Mati was close enough to Salvador Dali to talk about "acting as each other's pimps and cultural spies", Mati would not call himself a surrealist.
No doubt Mati had his share of the mind-altering substances that were so much a part of the scene that he moved in in the sixties and seventies, but ultimately his extraordinary vision of the world about us came, not from chemical enhancement - but from looking harder!

 Robert Venosa Biography
New York City born, Venosa was transported into the world of fine art in the late 60's after having experimented with psychedelics and having seen the work of the Fantastic Realists - Ernst Fuchs and Mati Klarwein in particular - both of whom he eventually met and studied under.
Even though it was ever put to the test, discipline was one of the more important necessities that Mati emphasized and - through his own adherence - strongly impressed on me: I could only join in the festivities after my work was done and all brushes were washed.
Mati taught well the techniques of painting and, even more relevant, of quality living.

Meanwhile, the original painting from Bitches Brew remains lost: sold to an unknown buyer, although Klarwein claims he's not troubled by the loss of an original — the important thing is the image itself.
