Mating of yeast - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mating type is determined by a single locus, MAT, which in turn governs the sexual behaviour of both haploid and diploid cells.
Combined with the strong drive for haploid cells to mate with cells of the opposite mating type and form diploids, mating type switching and consequent mating will cause the majority of cells in a colony to be diploid, regardless of whether a haploid or diploid cell founded the colony.
The process of mating type switching is a gene conversion event initiated by the HO gene.

Mating Type Donor Preference in Yeast
The two mating types can mate with each other to form an a/alpha diploid that can undergo meiosis (and DNA recombination) resulting in four meiotic products or haploid spores.
To accomplish this, the MAT locus, which controls the cell’s mating type, is changed from an a-specific sequence to an alpha-specific sequence or vice versa by gene conversion induced by the HO endonuclease (see Introduction).
This suggests Mcm1p is responsible for removing nucleosomes from the RE region and that the binding of the alpha2 protein aids in positioning the phased nucleosomes.

 Chlamydomonas mating
This activated mating structure is analogous to the acrosome found on sperm (the first sperm component to react with the egg).
Cells of the other mating type may carry the gene but do not express it, presumably because the gene is for a function specific to only one mating type.
Chlamydomonas, the mating structures also appear to be covered with a glycoprotein that is involved in the adhesion of these gametes.

Thus, a cell with the a mating type can switch to a and vice versa, in a highly regulated manner, such that two out of four granddaughters, which are sister cells, switch to the opposite mating type.
The hallmark of the cassette organization of mating type loci is that the cellular phenotype of P or M is dictated by the allele present at mat1 since the donor loci mat2 and mat3 are transcriptionally silent.

 Tetrahymena Genetics
This is the stage at which site-specific DNA rearrangements and mating type determination (discussed in the text) occur in the MAC.
In the wild, the frequencies of the seven mating types tend to be equal and conjugation seems to occur frequently [9].

Diploids, tetrads, and random spore analysis
One of the most common questions we get is "why won't my diploid behave?" This page provides information on the nuts'n'bolts of genetic analysis: mating types and crosses, making diploids, working with h90 strains, and analysing meiotic products by random spore analysis or by tetrad dissection.
Asci produced from direct mating and meiosis are typically curved in a zig-zag or a banana shape (see h90 picture).
However, in pombe, the mutations in mating type are not in the switching apparatus (as in an ho mutant, which lacks an endonuclease), but in the mating type locus itself.

Typically, ANALYST mates will encourage each other to continue the formal education process, and you'll find a disproportionate number of ANALYST couples doing the ``working their way through school together'' trip, especially in highly technical or specialized fields, such as science, medicine, and law.
And, of course, that usually requires that the counselor, too, be an ANALYST type, who may fall right into believing the couple's persuasive intellectual defenses and never expose the fears and other emotional concerns at the root of their well- disguised conflict.
These diverse types are intelligent in different ways from the ANALYST, and, frankly, the ANALYST usually regards their intelligence to be of an inferior variety.
