Topic: Matorral

Tamaulipan matorral - Encyclopedia of Earth
This unique Tamaulipan Matorral ecoregion lies in Northern Mexico with its southern limit along the line between the nearctic and neotropical realms.
The Tamaulipan matorral constitutes a unique assemblage of plant and animal species, and due to the geological history of the region, has outstanding biodiversity features.
Of the 151 species of endemic agavaceae that live in Mexico, 75 have restricted distributions in areas that served as "ecological" islands in the past; the Tamaulipan matorral is one of these areas.

Camargi-Ricalde SL; Dhillion SS; Jimenez-Gonzalez C. Mycorrhizal perennials of the "matorral xerofilo" and the "selva baja caducifolia" communities in the semiarid Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Valley, Mexico.
We investigated the mycorrhizal status of perennial xeric plant species occurring in the "matorral xerofilo" (arid tropical scrub) and the ecotone of the "selva baja caducifolia" (tropical deciduous forest) communities in the semiarid valley of Tehuacan-Cuicatlan, south-central Mexico.
The perennial species examined are dominant/codominant elements within the "matorral xerofilo" and the "selva baja caducifolia", both endangered communities in the Biosphere Reserve Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Valley.

The vegetation represents a transition from the desert scrub of the drier mezquital in the lowlands to the woodlands of the Sierras.
The matorral of this zone is full of shrubs and small trees that can survive here with the benefit of more moisture from mountain storms.
Despite significant human populations in the Tamaulipas Matorral, the ecoregion is in a good state of conservation.

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Meseta Central matorral (NA1307)
The Meseta Central matorral ecoregion is one of the most extensive floristic and physiographic provinces of Mexico, and is a region where past geological events have promoted the diversification of the biota (Goldman 1946).
The subsequent isolation of the region favored the differentiation and evolution of endemic species in each of the fragmented portions, therefore the matorral of the Meseta Central is characterized by its high content of endemic species.
The matorral of central Mexico has been partially eliminated, although some areas in the northern portion, (near the southern limit between the Chihuahuan desert and this region) are relatively intact.

The dominant vegetation in central Chile is an evergreen shrubland called matorral, similar in appearance to the California chaparral.
The arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the early 16th century changed this situation and led to rapid agricultural expansion and landscape clearance for grazing by goats and cattle.
Plant communities in central Chile are dominated by matorral, coastal matorral, and sclerophyll (drought-resistant) forest.

Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and shrub - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shrubland: Shrublands are dense thickets of evergreen sclerophyll shrubs and small trees, called chaparral (California), matorral (Chile and Spain), maquis (France and elsewhere around the Mediterranean), macchia (Italy) fynbos (South Africa), or kwongan (Southwest Australia).
In some places shrublands are the mature vegetation type, and in other places the result of degradation of former forest or woodland by logging or overgrazing, or disturbance by major fires.
Northern coastal scrub and coastal sage scrub, also known as soft chaparral, occur near the California coast; strandveld in the Western Cape of South Africa; coastal matorral in the central Chile, and sand-heath and kwongan in Southwest Australia.

Rehabilitation Of Chile's Overgrazed, Overfarmed Espinales
Prior to the arrival of Europeans in the sixteenth century the dominant vegetation of the central valley was presumed to have been matorral, an ecosystem resembling the chaparral of California.
Their plan runs the gamut from restoration to reallocation: somewhat degraded matorral can be restored to healthy matorral; land that has been under cultivation for a long period of time can be reallocated (i.e., converted to a type of land use that may bear little resemblance to the original ecosystem) to agricultural use.
However, Fuentes (1986) studied the natural recolonization and recovery of disturbed matorral vegetation and found both processes to be extremely slow, limited by, among other things, healthy populations of European rabbits.
