This is where three mountains, Börzsöny in the western part of the county, Cserhát dominant in the middle part and Mátra rising to the sky on the east meet and embrace each other.
The mountains were created by volcanic activity in the Miocene Age, and the andesite cover is on the even older, sedimentary rocks deposited from the sea during the tertiary period.
As the mountains are rather closed and the slopes are steep, towns and villages are not everywhere, people are living mainly along the edges, where the valleys are wide enough.

The parish-church built in the 12th century in honour of the martyr St. Lawrence is one of the notable monuments in the small town, and is also the favourite departure point for mountain walks and trips.
