 Matrimony
Matrimony is the sacrament through which a baptized man and a baptized woman join themselves for life in a lawful marriage, which is a covenant of love and a "partnership of the whole of life." (1601)
The purpose of Matrimony is twofold: the mutual love and communion of husband and wife, and the generation and proper upbringing of children.
To receive the sacrament of Matrimony worthily it is necessary to be free from serious sin, to know and understand the duties of married life, and to obey the laws of the Church concerning marriage.

 Matrimony
The Fathers of the Church, from the evangelist John and Paul attest to the reinstitution and sanctification of matrimony by Christ and its elevation to a mystical signification.
The seventh is the sacrament of matrimony which is a sign of the close union of Christ and the Church according to the words of the Apostle: "This is a great mystery - I mean in reference to Christ and to the Church" (Eph 5:32).
Therefore, since matrimony under the law of the gospel is, because of the grace given through Christ, superior to the marriage unions of earlier times, our holy Fathers, the councils, and the tradition of the universal Church have always rightly taught that matrimony should be included among the sacraments of the New Law.

SUMMA THEOLOGICA: Is Matrimony a kind of joining?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Now by matrimony certain things are related to one another; for the husband is the wife's husband, and the wife is the husband's wife.
Matrimony is the bond by which they are tied formally, not effectively, and so it need not be distinct from the joining.
But the relations of matrimony, on the one hand, have unity in both extremes, namely on the part of the cause, since it is directed to the one identical begetting; whereas on the part of the subject there is numerical diversity.

 On Matrimony
The banns of matrimony are published in the Church that any person who might know of any impediment to the marriage may have an opportunity to declare it privately to the priest before the marriage takes place and thus prevent an invalid or unlawful marriage.
To receive the Sacrament of Matrimony worthily it is necessary to be in the state of grace, and it is necessary also to comply with the laws of the Church.
In receiving the Sacrament of matrimony we are bound to comply with whatever laws of the Church concern Matrimony; such as laws forbidding solemn marriage in Lent and Advent; or marriage with relatives or with persons of a different religion, and in general all laws that refer to any impediment to marriage.

Holy Matrimony by Pauline Zingleman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
For while Holy Matrimony is in the nature of a contract, and Penance in the nature of a judicial process, the three first‑mentioned take the form of a religious consecration of the recipients.
Since the matrimonial contract is in itself the Sacrament of Matrimony, it follows that the rite of the sacrament, its matter and form, must be looked for only in the mutual consent of the contracting parties.
The explanation more commonly given is this: the words of consent of both parties, inasmuch as they signify the matrimonial surrender of self, constitute the matter of the sacrament; inasmuch as they signify the acceptance of matrimonial rights they constitute the form of the sacrament.

When Jesus came, he elevated matrimony to the same status it had originally possessed between Adam and Eve—the status of a sacrament.

 CBS News | Pope Slams Gay 'Pseudo-Matrimony' | June 6, 2005 17:30:08
Benedict repeatedly referred to marriage as a union between man and woman in an address to a conference of the Diocese of Rome on the role of the family held at St. John Lateran basilica.
He said matrimony was not just a "casual sociological construction" that changed in certain times in history but rather an institution that had its roots "in the most profound essence of the human being."
"The various forms of the dissolution of matrimony today, like free unions, trial marriages and going up to pseudo-matrimonies by people of the same sex, are rather expressions of an anarchic freedom that wrongly passes for true freedom of man," he said.

Byzantine Marriage - Mystery of Matrimony
1) The Holy Mystery (Sacrament) of Matrimony is one of the seven channels of divine grace, instituted by Christ, to sanctify and to support Christian family life.
A Christian marriage is a vocation, that is a special invitation of God to two baptized persons to marital union, in order to devote themselves to the service of a new life in Christ.
Thus the spiritual nature of man and his vocation to cooperate with God in the propagation of the human race constitute the great dignity of matrimony, especially when it is sanctified by the Church, as ordered by Jesus.

If you can handle that, Thug Matrimony is nothing short of fantastic and required listening for fans of the Dirty South.
