The Matrix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The film describes a world in which the Matrix is an artificial reality created by sentient machines in order to pacify, subdue and make use of the human population as an energy source by growing them and connecting them to the Matrix with cybernetic implants.
It turns out that the world which Neo has inhabited since birth, the Matrix, is an illusory simulated reality construct of the world of 1999, developed by the machines to keep the human population docile whilst they are connected to generators and their energy is harvested.
Stewart claims that the story of The Matrix was based on a manuscript she wrote titled "The Third Eye" which she allegedly submitted to the Wachowskis in response to an advertisement.

The Matrix series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Matrix series consists primarily of three films, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, all written and directed by the Wachowski brothers and set in the same universe.
The Matrix reused some of the film sets from Dark City, a movie filmed shortly before that was similar in plot and style but was not yet released long enough to have influenced the movies as The Matrix had already entered post-production by the time Dark City was released theatrically.
Interpretations of The Matrix often reference Baudrillard's philosophy to demonstrate that the movie is an allegory for contemporary experience in a heavily commercialized, media-driven society, especially of the developed countries.

Larry and Andy Wachowski, the writers and directors of The Matrix trilogy, have been reluctant to share their interpretation of the films from day one, fearing that whatever they said would turn into dogma.
The Matrix injected mainstream culture with a straight shot of the surreal, where fact and fiction and truth and appearance are not grounded in a single pre-given "reality," because reality is simply what appears to be real.
