Whenever a sound wave hits the diaphragm, the coil is displaced in proportion to the amplitude of the wave, causing the coil to cut across the lines of magnetic flux supplied by the permanent magnet.
Since the mass of the diaphragm and the coil is quite large, compared to the pressure changes in the sound wave, the dynamic microphone may not respond well to sharp transient sounds and it may fail to record minute changes in voice intensity.
They seem to be very good for recording interviews, though their 360-degree pick-up range introduces too much noise to the signal for it to be used reliably in acoustic analysis.

Berliner determined that the method of recording used by the cylinder machines, which punched the pattern of sound vibrations into the floor of the recording medium (the wax, or tinfoil, covered cylinders), was fundamentally flawed.
He found that sound waves captured in a lateral, rather than vertical, motion, cut into the walls, rather than the floor, of the wax medium, resulted in higher quality recordings.
Records could then be pressed from this metal "negative", as long as the master disc held up.

 IASA Cataloguing Rules
Record shops and some sound recording libraries and archives traditionally filed their collections of published sound recordings (discs) on the shelf according to size, label and catalogue number.
Published sound recordings, which are mass-produced for commercial release, normally have printed labels affixed to the surface of the disc, spool or cassette.
Record labels are also bought and sold by companies, so that over time a particular label (and the recording rights associated with it) may pass through various ownerships.

However, cylinder recorders were used to a great extent in live recording of ethnographic field notes as well as for office dictation, so archival collections may have cylinders dating from the 1930s through the early 1960s.
The length of sound recordings on cylinders depend on the dimensions of the cylinder, the numbers of grooves per inch, and the rotations per minute (rpm).
In magnetic recording systems, currents induced in magnetic heads create and read data; in magneto-optical systems, laser light writes data, and polarized light reads data from the disk because the light is reflected differently depending on the magnetization of the substrate (this is known as the Kerr effect).

G&S Discography: Origins and Uses of Matrix Numbers
The ultimate reference for the discussion of matrix and catalog numbers is the matrix itself or, in lieu thereof, a pressing or impression derived from that matrix or from a copy of that matrix, and the catalog number printed on the label.
This dealt with the lateral-cut recording of cylinders using lampfl applied to a "thin strip of paper, parchment, metal, or other suitable substance." According to Gelatt, Berliner applied for a patent for the glass disc recording and photoengraving process on September 26, 1887.
To record, the disc or plate, as it was commonly called, was rotated under a needle or stylus mounted on a feed screw (a major point which Berliner derived from his study of the phonoautograph) to move the stylus laterally across the plate.
