Matrix (Doctor Who) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Matrix, in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who, is a massive computer system on the planet Gallifrey that acts as the repository of the combined knowledge of the Time Lords.
The Keeper of the Matrix holds the Key of Rassilon that grants access to the Seventh Door, which was thought legendary until the Doctor used the Key to access it in The Ultimate Foe.
In the Doctor Who comic strip published in Doctor Who Magazine, the Matrix is depicted as being inhabited by the minds of dead Time Lords, who have a sort of quasi-existence within its confines.

 Outpost Gallifrey: Reviews
The sombre Seventh Doctor and the headstrong Ace are perfectly written, and Joseph Liebermann, whose long journey is written almost in the form of pre-titles sequences throughout the book, becomes the most memorable character ever to meet the Seventh Doctor, at least in the BBC world.
The seventh Doctor is the ideal protagonist to put under the microscope and explore his darkness because he is (for me) capable of being the scariest of the lot.
The Doctor and Ace are being pursued by a dark entity, and pause to hide in 1963.

 Matrix
The Doctor starts out all moody and then suffers a burst of amnesia, and as such ends up wandering around the novel without any idea of who he is - something that was frankly dealt with much better later on in Caught on Earth arc with the eighth Doctor.
He's got his lackey Jed, who's really such a lowlife that there's not really any sympathetic characteristics about him, and so he just spends all his time fawning and being confused by things beyond the realm of his understanding (which he appears to be just about everything).

The Doctor's fight for survival in the Matrix is the highlight of the story and is a testimony to the Doctor's wit and determination.
Of course, when the Doctor comes back to reality, he still has the Master to deal with, and this rotting, robe-clad version, unlike the previous (and later) portrayers, has all of the viciousness, egotism, and homididal mania we expect from the character with none of his usual charm or humor.
Of the 253 episodes of "Doctor Who" that were produced in the 1960s, 108 no longer exist in the BBC Television Archives due to an archive purge in the 1970s.

Earthbound Timelords: "Review: 'Matrix' Doctor Who Novel"
Who else would have access to the Matrix, who else would be so evil that he would have a direct effect on the Doctor and make the Doctor kill, who else would be so evil that he was as evil as 13 Doctors put together.
Even more bothersome to me is the fact that it is the Seventh Doctor who carries out a number of the Jack the Ripper murders (occasionally it is his villainous alter ego but the fact remains that the Doctor himself does commit murder).
"Matrix" is not a necessary read, and should probably be passed on unless one is determined to read every Doctor Who novel there is. (c) Copyright Zepo, 1999.

What Doctor Who does deliver is keen attention to character, dialogue, and plot.
Doctor Who was always something more than its 1963 bandw kid's show origins suggest, and over the years it evolved into a program that could make some very clever, thought-provoking comments and observations while at the same time delivering a fun and suspenseful adventure.

I say this because its plot attempts to be an epic tale and fails, its supporting characters fail to impress and its employment of its central villain is terribly appaling.
The Doctor and Ace have a very interesting adventure in a classic setting, one which often inspires a great story (like 'Talons of Weng-Chiang', 'Evil of the Daleks' and - stretching over to the Edwardian era - 'Pyramids of Mars').

The second Doctor was somewhat too cartoonish for me, and the fourth just missed the mark of being Tom Baker type insanity and ended up being Dave Stone type insanity (which is a completely different style of madness, believe it or not).
I've been a Doctor Who fan for 25 years or so, and read a decent amount of the novels, but this was the first I ever actively said "No Mas".
The characterizations of both Doctors were WAY off and the only redeeming quality was Romana, who was the only well characterized character.
