The Matrix website would definitely appeal to fans of the film: there is an asynchronous chat section with a steady amount of postings, and lots of Quicktime videos of actual movie footage or of the film's stars doing publicity promotions.
While it isn't clear whether the comic artists at The Matrix website are getting paid for their work, they are obviously a bunch of individuals very committed to expanding upon The Matrix storyline as originally conceived by Andy and Larry Wachowski.
Matrix: The TV Series and Matrix: The Las Vegas Experience are probably not too far down the road from here.

Matrix (fictional universe) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Humans are grown in pods and are connected by cybernetic implants to an artificial reality called the Matrix, which keeps their minds under control while the machines use the thermal energy of their bodies as an energy source.
The virtual reality world simulated by the Matrix consists primarily of a vast unnamed megacity which resembles human civilization around the turn of the 21st century (This time period was chosen because it is supposedly the pinnacle of human civilization).
The survivors would be told the prophecy of the One, but would not be allowed to know of the cycle of the Matrix's renewal, each time believing it to be around the year 2100 when they were revived, and the first time anyone had been freed from the Matrix.

The explanation for The Matrix's unusually wide popularity, and the intense seriousness with which it is taken, is that it offers its viewers, rational or otherwise, a coherent way of conceptualising the world.
Matrix stories don't have to involve particular characters nor be set in a particular world, but need only be inspired by a malleable central premise, the dichotomy of reality and computer-induced illusion.
One measure of the potency of the Wachowskis' fictional scheme is that it appeals both to the hyper-rational and to those whose rationality has failed them - like the killers in the United States who supposedly invoked the film as an explanation for their actions.

 Slavoj Zizek - Reloaded Revolutions
The paradox, the "infinite judgment" of The Matrix is the co-dependence of the two aspects: the total artificiality (the constructed nature) of reality, and the triumphant return of the body in the sense of the ballet-like quality of fights with slow motions and defiance of the laws of ordinary physical reality.
Recall a wonderful scene in which Cipher, the traitor, the agent of the Matrix among the rebels, who is located in reality, kills one after the other rebels (who are immersed into the VR of the Matrix) by simply unplugging them from the connection to the machine.
This situation, while parallel to that of all humans who are plugged into the Matrix, is worse insofar as here, humans are fully aware not only of their true situation, but also of the threat posed in reality by the evil agent who intends to kill them shortly.

 The Philosophy of the Matrix
They are people who grew up in the Matrix world and their experience of their Matrix body and how to use it makes that phenomenal body their body, even if another body they can't even imagine has in its skull the brain that is the causal basis of their experience.
Likewise, in The Matrix version of the brain in the vat situation, those who have been hauled from the vat into what they experience as the everyday world can see that what they took for granted about the causal ground of their experience before was mistaken.
The advantage of a solitary Matrix is that the virtual environment can be completely tailored to an individual's desires perhaps the Matrix "reads off" the content of desires from his brain, anticipating a little, matching its programming as far as possible to the satisfaction of his desires as they develop and change.

The Animatrix is a collection of nine visually stunning short subjects intended to fill the gaps between The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded.
Larry and Andy Wachowski, the creators of the Matrix feature films, were involved with each of the animated shorts to varying degrees, insuring that the shorts dovetailed neatly within the Matrix’s fictional universe.
The Matrix is about a world where machines have enslaved humanity, and most of the human race is blissfully unaware of the truth, lost in a shared virtual reality.

 Unicron: Character or Plot Device?
The purpose of the Matrix was not significantly expounded upon in the film, but given that it resembles a miniature planet-mode Unicron, the implication is clear that its sole purpose is to destroy Unicron.
Of course, there's also the notion that even in a fictional universe in which there is a very clear deliniation of "good guys" and bad guys," kids are far less likely to root for characters who don't even have toys made in their likeness.

 The Real Matrix
The Matrix was a self ware entity that was knowingly manipulating to ensure its own survival by generating the events necessary to produce the fear that empowered it.
In the movies, the Matrix is depicted from the outside as a series of green numbers and codes, while inside it is experienced as the sort of world we think we live in mountains, streets, cars, people and so on.
The Matrix entity, 'self aware fear', had created an illusion of time to trap its prey, its prisoners, in a state of disconnection in which they would forget who they were.

The physics behind the hologram are a little difficult to explain in layman terms, but the general gist of it is this: Holograms are three-dimensional images recorded in film by splitting a laser beam in half.
The holographic model of the universe basically describes existence as a literal hologram created by vibrations in the universe bouncing off each other, creating interference patterns that record what we see as the physical world.

 IN DEFENSE OF THE MATRIX.
The first Matrix film not only contained a premise that could be sufficiently described as "really cool," but employed a unique cultural nexus of ideas unmatched in popular American cinema since the independent film boom of the early 70's.
Now, add to all of this the fact that The Matrix itself is an entirely new plane of fictional reality, so comprehensive and original as to be unmatched in American popular cultural by anything short of The Empire, Middle Earth and The United Federation of Planets.
The Matrix universe is such a momentous artistic achievement, functioning on so many levels, that the negative popular reaction to the last two installments of the series doesn't just sit poorly with us, it's positively infuriating.
