Variable matrix decoder - US Patent 4799260
The decoder generates a first control signal substantially proportional to the logarithm of the ratio of the amplitudes of two of the channel signals to detect, as between two of the channel signals, whether the amplitude of one signal dominates that of the other.
The decoder also generates a second control signal substantially proportional to the logarithm of the ratio of the amplitudes of the sum and the difference between two of the channel signals to detect the dominant signal in terms of amplitude.
The decoder includes a matrix means responsive to the two or more channel signals and the two control signals for generating a number of output signals according to an algorithm.

LDPC Decoder :: Blocks (Communications Blockset)
This block implements the message-passing algorithm for decoding low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, which are linear error control codes with sparse parity-check matrices and long block lengths that can attain performance near the Shannon limit.
Decode generic binary LDPC codes where no patterns in the parity-check matrix are assumed.
(n – k) and n are the number of rows and columns, respectively, in the parity-check matrix.

 Sound Blaster Entertainment: DTS-Extended Surround
The main feature of this format is that because the SL, SR and Rear channels are fully independent, the sound can be designed with total freedom and it is possible to achieve a sense that the acoustic images are moving about freely among the background sounds surrounding the listener from 360 degrees.
With this format, the additional SB channel signals undergo matrix encoding and are input to the SL and SR channels beforehand.
The performance of the encoder used at the time of recording can be fully matched using a high precision digital matrix decoder developed by DTS, thereby achieving surround sound more faithful to the producer's sound design aims than with conventional 5.1 or 6.1-channel systems.

 Dolby Pro Logic IIx
While Dolby's Cinema Matrix system, Dolby Stereo, and the consumer equivalent, Dolby Pro Logic, are not the only Matrix Surround Sound systems in the world, but they are arguably the best as evidenced by their commercial success.
The Pro Logic matrix decoding technology is used on the two surround channels, turning them into three: Left Surround, Center Surround, and Right Surround.
This is the same principal as Dolby Digital EX, and in fact the same source track as a Dolby Digital EX soundtrack, only at decode time it uses DTS's own matrix technology to derive the trio of surround channels.

JavaScript Matrix Falling Decoder - The Code Project - JavaScript
Essentially how the Falling Matrix code works is very simple, you can see the iterative process the development went through, if you download early versions of the code from PlanetSourceCode.
The project started out simply as a code breaking simulation that Hollywood popularizes, the letters just sort of spin randomly until each letter locks in place, the first version I created this is all it did, but it did it in a very flexible way that allowed you to easily change the resulting message.
At this time, I thought that it'd be nice to have this effect multiple times on the page, and now with ASP doing all the creation of the script, I could...except my JavaScript was using global (page level) variables, so this had to be fixed.

 Simple Surround Sound Decoder
This surround-sound decoder is based on the "Hafler" principle, first discovered by David Hafler sometime in the early 1970s.
The original idea was to connect a pair of speakers as shown in Figure 1, for use as the rear speakers in the surround setup.
This is normally used to delay the sound supplied to the rear speakers, and effectively makes the sound stage larger by making the rear speakers sound further away.

Electronic Hobbyists Corner - Hafler Matrix Decoder
The Hafler Matrix decoder I use takes an extra step and digitally delays the difference signal by up to 33ms, to ensure that the difference signal reaches the listener after the original stereo signal.
The decoder also uses an active low pass filter to derive a LFE (Low Frequency Effects) or sub-woofer channel from the mono (L + R) signal, and provides inverted and true outputs for bridging a stereo amplifier.
Below is a schematic for a very basic analog Hafler Matrix decoder with buffered L and R channels, centre (L + R) channel, difference channel (L - R), and L and R LFE (sub-woofer) channels.

Read-only memory using complementary conductivity type insulated gate field effect transistors - Patent 4037217
In a standby condition of the memory matrix, an interrogation signal (logic level 0) is applied thereto causing all the "killer" transistors and precharge transistors of the memory matrix to turn on at a standby logic level 0 output from all of the matrix columns.
Transistor 26 constitutes an element of column k'-1 of the matrix of the memory, and its drain is connected to the drains of other transistors in that column, such as transistors 28 and 30, whose gates are connected, by means of transfer gates, to individual inverter outputs from the decoder 6.
Line i of the decoder is precharged at logic "0" level by transistor 13 being made conductive by the application to its gate of the output logic level "1" from the inverter 10, 11.

5-2-5 matrix encoder and decoder system patent invention
The decoding matrix includes frequency dependent circuitry that improves the balance between front and rear signals, provides smooth sound motion around a seven channel version of the system, and makes the sound of a five channel version closer to that of a seven channel version.
The matrix elements vary to reduce the loudness of directionally encoded signals in outputs that are not involved in producing the intended direction, while enhancing the loudness of these signals in outputs that are involved in reproducing the intended direction, while at all times preserving the left/right separation of any simultaneously occurring input signals.
In addition, these matrix elements may be designed to preserve the energy balance between the various components of the input signal, as much as possible, so that the balance between vocals and accompaniment is preserved in the decoder outputs.

Multichannel matrix surround decoders for two-eared listeners   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Matrix equations for both a 5 channel and a 7 channel decoder are presented, along with an active and a passive encoder for 5 channel films.
The matrix design for a signal steered to the rear hemisphere in the earlier decoder was developed heuristically and the separation between the rear outputs for steered material is not optimal.
The standard film decoder does not boost the level to the rear speaker, and thus a standard film decoder (assuming it is well designed) does not increase the music level as a sound effect moves to the rear.

 U.S. Patent: 5074558 - Matrix address decoder for pinball games - December 24, 1991
The decoding operation performed by the matrix address decoder requires the transfer of only three bytes of information from the main microprocessor: a one-byte sequential identification number of the device for which information is sought and a two-byte starting memory address of the proper status information matrix.
The eight-bit output from the decoder 32 (the mask byte) is passed to a mask buffer 34, where it may be read by the main processor 12 via bus 14.
The mask byte output from the decoder 38 is passed to a second mask buffer 40, where it may be read by the main processor 12 via bus 14.

Math Forum - Ask Dr. Math   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Well, basically, we're multiplying the original matrix (I'll call it M) by an encoding matrix E and a decoding matrix D: M*E*D Now since we carry out the multiplication in steps, this is how the grouping goes: (M*E)*D i.e., we're multiplying first by the encoder matrix, and then (second) by the decoder matrix.
So when you're multiplying by the encoder matrix and then the decoder matrix, the net product is pretty much just multiplying your original matrix by 1 - it's going to the same as it was originally.
We say that the decoder matrix is the inverse of the encoder matrix.

The default matrix is given in Figure 15, and if the encoder decides it is warranted, it may substitute a new quantization matrix at a picture level and download it to the decoder via the bitstream.
Because the quantizer matrix may be changed on a picture basis and the quantizer scale may be changed on a macroblock basis, these parameters are commonly used by encoder rate control algorithms to provide dynamic control over the relative buffer fullness.
To decode a bitstream generated from the encoder of Figure 1, it is necessary to reverse the order of the encoder processing.

I never have the heart to tell them that the decoder in their receiver only produces anywhere from 3db to 15db of separation between channels, which does not create a very spatial effect were one can clearly say where the sound originates from.
Some of the decoders, either separate or in a receiver, built in the late '70's or early '80's could achieve as much as 50db of separation between channels, and are fairly quite in regards to noise.
While the decoders in new receivers are different than the ones in the days of old, they still are pretty close.

 Multichannel film today
In its struggle to get it right, Dolby implemented several matrix encode/decode processes in the early years of the format and settled on a combination of technologies called variable matrix decoding and equal sound power.
In the variable matrix scheme, a different decoding matrix is switched into the listening path based on the dominance of either left, center, right or surround signals.
Each decoding matrix is designed to maintain sound power in the listening environment; when it is steering, the matrix decoder has the least perceptible effect on the total energy in the sound field.
