Matroska - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Matroska (common file extensions being.mkv and.mka) is a project to develop an open source multimedia container format similar to Apple's QuickTime, MPEG's MP4 or Microsoft's Advanced Streaming Format.
The project was announced on December 7, 2002 as a fork of the Multimedia Container Format project, after disagreements with that project's creator about the use of the Extensible Binary Meta Language (EBML) instead of another binary format.
The founders of the Matroska project believe that the use of EBML brings them a number of advantages, including making it easier to extend the format in the future as new developments occur or as the project goals change.

Matroska boasts advanced features over AVI and WMV such as being able to include detailed chapter information, sub-chapters, titles, multiple audio and video streams, menus, subtitles and more.
The Matroska container allows for any number of text or vobsub subtitle streams, but if you want to edit subtitles you'll have to convert them from their native picture stream format to a text format.

Matroska files are either of a higher quality or more compact than OGM (roughly 174MB compared to 175MB for OGM), thanks to a new flexible file structure called EBML, also known as "Binary XML".
Matroska, which uses subs based on the Unicode, is expected to bypass these messy problems.
As of 7 June 2003, Matroska is still in the beta stage (version 0.4.x.) Since Matroska has not stablized yet, OGM is still the practical and realistic format to use.

(SuvwI' van bom) Matroska(MKV) video file format - what´s that?
Matroska is very young, not older than at most two years - it´s specifications aren´t even completely frozen yet(they still change), so it is well designed for new and future development as far as one can tell.
So I thought it´d be a good idea to include a few words regarding the handling of Matroska files - this is only of interest to those who actually work with them, or want to edit them in some way.
This feature might cause problems, though, as the Matroska format is very young, which means that it´s specifications might change(though it´s near maturity, so I don´t expect any drastic changes).

 Doom9's Forum - Matroska FAQ
The matroska project is a free, opensource container format, aiming to be able to offer a lot of advanced features, which older formats like AVI can't handle, on an extensible basis.
in fact matroska is based on a very flexible underlying framework called EBML, which allows to add more functionalities to the container format in the future (for example new A/V codecs, DVD-like menues) without breaking backwards compatibility with older software and files.
easy answer: the matroska team already prepared an install pack for you, which will enable you to play back nearly any matroska file on all directshow based players (for example media player classic, bsplayer, zoomplayer or the crappy windows media player).

The problem is there are so many audio codecs where you do not have access to data to be decompressed, such as WMA, Real Audio (actually that is not 100% true, but essentially you would need a WMA decoder passing down to another WMA decoder, much more work).
