Kumamoto Prefecture is located in the center of Kyushu, the southernmost of the four major Japanese islands.

FUKUOKA (Kyodo) The health ministry reported findings from 2003 on Thursday that 9.5 percent of the residents in or around the town of Uki, Kumamoto Prefecture, which used to have an asbestos mine, had developed pleural plaques.
Based on X-rays and CT scans of the residents, the ministry found 938 people in the area centering on Uki, formerly the town of Matsubase, with pleural plaques.
The findings were first reported at a study group set up by the ministry in 2003 to review criteria for claiming workers' compensation for asbestos-linked accidents.

Since this was to be my third and last English Recitation contest, I felt that all students, especially the grade 2's (grade 8 back home), were really giving their all for a shot at the Kumamoto competition.
We really wanted to get the game in, since we hadn't played 5 innings yet, if the game were to have been cancelled, the score would have reverted to 0-0.
The weather cleared, the field was drained (I helped with that; nothing like a little work in the mud for the benefit of the boys), and we continued.

Ayumi invited me to stay at her parents house this weekend, and Saturday night we went in yukata to Matsubase’s festival and watched the fireworks, then on Sunday we made the long drive down to Amakusa to go dolphin watching and have a lovely buffet at a fancy hotel.
The weekend before last, I went to the Kumamoto Castle festival, along with some of the other exchange students.
The second flight has a total baggage limit of 15kgs, so I think I’ll arrange for my big suitcase to be delivered to the dorm at Kumamoto, at Narita, instead of lugging it on the train and paying excess baggage.
