Matsumae - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Matsumae was the name of a town in Hokkaido, Japan, near the port of Hakodate.
Since the Matsumae land was a march, a frontier land used as the border defense against the Ainu, the remainder of Hokkaido, then called Ezo, became essentially an Ainu reservation.
The bakufu sent an envoy to the Matsumae, requesting that the Russians make their way to the town of Matsumae by land; sensing a trap, the Russians refused, and were eventually allowed to make port in Hakodate, escorted by a Japanese vessel.

Matsumae Castle and town, Hokkaido Japan.
Matsumae played a key role in the trade and warfare with the Ainu tribes of the island, and in the subsequent conquest of Ainu territories that led to the aggressive colonization of the rest of Hokkaido when the Kaitakushi was established.
Matsumae is located at the southern end of the Oshima-hanto peninsula facing the Tsugaru strait separating Hokkaido from Aomori.
The people of Matsumae were neither consulted nor participants in the rushed "elections" held to confirm the leadership of the Ezo Republic, and under the guidance or direction of the Matsumae daimyo, the castle and town resisted the demands of the forces of the "Ezo Republic" and war ensued.

Matsumae clan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Matsumae clan was a Japanese clan which was granted the area around Matsumae, Hokkaidō as a march fief in 1590 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and charged with defending it, and by extension all of Japan, from the Ainu 'barbarians' to the north.
Since the Matsumae land was a march, a frontier land used as the border defense against the Ainu, the remainder of Hokkaidō, then called Ezo, essentially became an Ainu reservation.
Although Japanese influence and control over the Ainu gradually grew stronger over the centuries, at that time, they were left to their own devices and were not considered part of Japanese territory by the shogunate.

Both the upper band (from parent Matsumae) and the lower bands (from the RILs) were sequenced, and all lower bands were found to result from precise mPing loss, i.e., no footprints were left.
Immobilization of mPing and Pong was evidenced by monomorphism in the Southern blot hybridization pattern among six random individual plants of each line (A), and by locus-assay at 11 mPing-bracketing and 3 Pong-bracketing loci known to harbor highly mobile mPing or Pong in the RILs (supplementary table 1).

 ainu
Not until the Tokugawa government granted the Matsumae clan exclusive rights to trade with the Ainu, did official policy towards the Ainu begin to truly shift the balance in power.
The motivations of this first exclusively sanctioned “Ainu-Wajin” relationship originated out of greed (what Matsumae Yoshihiro perceived to be Ezo’s “mountains of gold”) and ended in ever-evolving trade (and power) disparities (Walker 36).
The display of a concern for “practical” liberties may appear to conflict with central ideologies of cultural (and, soon after, ethnic) hierarchies, but they are truly one and the same as such paternalistic assumptions reflect assumed ideological power structures.
