Mie Prefecture was formed after the Meiji Restoration from the old province of Ise, as well as the smaller provinces of Shima and Iga.
Mie Prefecture forms the eastern part of the Kii Peninsula, and is bordered by Aichi, Gifu, Shiga, Kyoto, Nara, and Wakayama.
As of 2000 Mie Prefecture's 5,776.44 km²; landmass is divided into 64.8% forest, 11.5% agriculture, 6% residential area, 3.8% roads, and 3.6% rivers.

Matsusaka beef, for example, originated in the Tajima beef of Hyogo Prefecture's Tajima area, a location blessed with beautiful mountain streams.

As of September 1, 2005, the city has an estimated population of 170,723 and the density of 273.68 people per km².
Matsusaka was founded in 1588 in the province of Ise (伊勢国; -no kuni) or Seishu (勢州; seishū) by Gamo Ujisato (蒲生氏郷; Gamō Ujisato).
In 1588, Gamo began construction of a castle in the Yoiho (四五百; yoiho) forest and named the site "Matsusaka" (松阪; matsusaka), with characters meaning "pine" and "hill/slope".

Since I began my journey more or less with Ozu, it was a nice feeling to complete a circle of sorts and end my trip (more or less) by making a visit to the Seishunkan in Matsusaka (Mie prefecture).
seishun means youth and the seishunkan is a museum dedicated to the period of the great Japanese filmmaker’s youth (from age 9 to 19, approximately) that he spent in Matsusaka.
The museum is housed in a small building made to represent an old-time small town Japanese movie house, and was built on the site of the former Ozu family home (razed in a 1950s fire).

Ozu Youth House (Ozu Yasujiro Seishunkan) opened in Matsusaka, Mie at the end of 2002.
In 1951 in Matsusaka, Ozu took his co-scriptwriter Noda to the small old Kaguraza theatre and said,"If this moviehouse had not existed, I believe I would have never become a movie director." The Kaguraza and his house were burned down by the great Matsusaka fire in 1951, and nothing of them has been left.
