Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, the world's biggest consumer electronics maker, is raising output of plasma display panels (PDP) at a factory in western Japan ahead of schedule because of rising demand for flat-screen televisions.
Matsushita Plasma Display Panel Co, a venture with Toray Industries Inc, will raise output to 100,000 42-inch panels from this month at its factory in Ibaraki, Osaka, because of rising demand for large screens and the spread of digital broadcasting, it said yesterday.
Matsushita is seeking a bigger share of the global plasma display market, which may grow by a third to US$11 billion next year, according to an April forecast by researcher ISuppli Corp. Price cuts by panel makers are helping convince more consumers to switch to flat-panel televisions from older cathode-ray tube sets.

Matsushita, the maker of Panasonic brand products, has been able to cut costs fast enough to keep pace with steep price falls and hold its own against liquid crystal (LCD) TV giants such as Sony Corp. <6758.T>.
Matsushita is considering cutting its stake in JVC, and potential buyers include audio equipment maker Kenwood Corp. <6765.T>, a source close to the situation said in December.
Matsushita shares lost 5 percent in October-December as liquid crystal display TV makers such as Sharp Corp. <6753.T> boosted their presence in a market for 40-inch TVs and above, which had been considered until recently as a plasma territory.

Matsushita, the maker of Panasonic brand products, belongs to a consortium that promotes the Blu-ray format against a competing standard called HD DVD, which is championed by Japanese electronics conglomerate Toshiba.
Matsushita said it had not decided when to launch the recorders overseas, but it plans to offer Blu-ray players in the United States later this month and in Europe in October where demand for playing DVDs is higher than recording TV programmes.
Matsushita shares closed down 2.02% at 2,425 yen, underperforming a 0.98% fall in the Nikkei average Sony's stock lost 2.03% to 4,830 yen and Toshiba fell 2.39% to 777 yen.
