Matt began playing the flute at age 8 and by the age of 17, he had won the All-Ireland Flute Championship and had a string of successes in National Fleadh Cheoil and Oireachtas.
Molloy's first appearance with the Chieftains was at a folk festival in Edinburgh in July 1979.

Matt Molloy is widely heralded as one of THE master irish flute players and this record shows why.
Molloy's playing is traditional, eschewing the sonic fireworks of Niall Keegan or the experimentation of Mike McGoldrick, yet his mastery is undeniable.
Matt Molloy has been making recordings for nearly 25 years, plus keeping up a grueling performance schedule with various bands and running a pub in his spare time.

 Matt Molloy
I first heard Matt Molloy play (on tape, not live) in 1977 during my second trip to Ireland.
After several years with the Bothy Band, Matt Molloy was invited by Paddy Moloney to join the Chieftains, probably the most well-known and accomplished traditional Irish group in history.
He proved he had the range of expression to play not only the wilder, more raw and raucous jigs and reels that made the Bothy Band famous, but also the beautiful airs and classically-influenced melodies of the Chieftains.

Molloy, the Chieftains' flutist, owns a pub on Bridge Street in Westport in the County Mayo, where musicians from all over Ireland gather for a pint, a slice of pizza, and the kind of impromptu sessions where traditional Irish music thrives best.
Except for Molloy and Patrick Street's Arty McGlynn, the musicians aren't famous, but they are quite skillful and contribute some mighty lively music--which, as the liner notes point out, is not the same as fast music.
I appreciate the peice being left on the CD so that this is a continuous flow of one special night at Matt Molloy's pub.

The Session: Recordings - Matt Molloy by Matt Molloy
This 33rpm record was my first recording of Molloy, and was it ever inspirational.
By this time I was already a Chieftains and Bothy Band fan and had all of their recordings.
I incorrectly assumed that Molloy was on the early Chieftains albums but later found that their flute player was Michael Tubridy, and Molloy was on the Bothy Band albums.

I tried to find the dots using Google with no luck based on the first two bars from the irishtune website.
Fair enough requesting a tune if you only have a name or you only heard it the once, and I know how daunting it can be transcribing a tune from Matt Molloy's playing, but it's not impossible.
If it hasn't been posted by next weekend, I'll look at it myself, but really, the best advice you'll get is "have a go yourself".
