Boston transportation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There is no direct rail connection between North Station and South Station; most transfers from one side to the other can be done using the MBTA Orange Line from North Station to Back Bay.
There is a third station in Back Bay and a fourth, outside the city, on Rte.
The MBTA operates 162 bus routes within the Greater Boston area with a combined ridership of approximately 375,000 one-way trips per day.

With only $8 million for the entire Mattapan project, MBTA officials are trying to quicken the design phase of the project so construction could coincide with the work being done on the four MBTA stations in Dorchester, ultimately saving money.
The plan is to shut down the Mattapan Station simultaneously with that of the Red Line Dorchester stations in either late spring or early summer of 2005.
With so many pieces still left to be sorted out on the station design, longtime Mattapan political activist Myrtle Huggins said she wanted the process to move quickly and not be delayed waiting for more residents to participate in the process.

After the MBTA announced last year that the line was going to have to close during the $33 million reconstruction of the Ashmont Station, state Senator Brian A. Joyce, a Milton Democrat, began pressing for renovations to the Milton stations.
MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the T is prepared to spend $2 million on renovations to the trolley stations.
Joyce said he hopes the Ashmont and Mattapan station projects can be undertaken simultaneously to minimize disruption of trolley service.

 Boston Transit: Mattapan-Ashmont Line
Mattapan station itself is a false facade similar to the complete facilities at Fields Corner and Ashmont (and the former one at Andrew) facing west with a roof extending about 40 feet east.
The turnaround area for the Red Line occupies the left side from Gallivan to Ashmont Station, where the tracks rise and separate, being joined by the station busway at the top of the viaduct, where another full stop is required.
Butler Station has a long island platform with two walkways across the tracks to the two ends of Butler St. which is divided in two by the rail line.

The MBTA Commuter Rail system is a suburban rail network that shares its tracks with freight trains, though unlike most systems the majority of track is owned by the MBTA.
Though the MBTA had agreed to extend the Green Line through the two cities, there had been no progress on the extension since the deal was made in 1990.
As built, many of the key transfer stations were prepayment stations, in which free transfers could be made between surface streetcar lines and grade-separated subway or elevated lines.

BOSTON BY T: Mattapan line nostalgic - The Daily Free Press - News
The design phase of the Mattapan Station project is 30 percent complete, and Clarke said she is thrilled with the corporation's accomplishments.
MBTA Spokeswoman Lydia Rivera said there are 11 cars currently operating on the Mattapan Line, all of which were refurbished in the last five to seven years.
The MBTA does not hesitate to proclaim its title as America's first subway, but nowhere is this designation more evident than on the Mattapan High Speed Line, where cable cars from 70 years ago operate on a six-stop stretch of track at no charge to riders.

The Indigo Line: Railroad Rapid Transit
At this time, there were no stations between Fairmount in Hyde Park and South Station---as a result, abutting residents in Mattapan and Dorchester had to endure all of the negative consequences of the rail line without being able to enjoy the benefits of the service.
Indigo Line fares should be standardized with fares on the regular MBTA rapid transit lines, such that fares to and from every station on the line is $1.00.
Since the Indigo Line's South Station terminus will not be the final destination of many of the route's riders, free transfers should be available to and from the Red and future Silver Lines at South Station.

As of 2002, the MBTA is focusing its efforts on plans for both a southern extension of the Silver Line and an expansion of the service along the Fairmount Commuter rail.
The MBTA is also incrementally retrofitting its buses with pollution-trapping diesel fuel filters, which will reduce particulate emissions from 89 tons per year in 2001 to 12 tons per year by 2003.
The second leg is slated to be added in spring 2004, connecting South Station and the South Boston Waterfront via an exclusive underground "transitway" with continuing service to Logan Airport.

Now Mattapan technically extends all the way up to Codman Square, but these boundaries are completely inaccurate to and unused by long-term residents (Bill Walczak, local historian and director of the Codman Square Health Center).
Rules of thumb such as "Mattapan is everything south of Morton Street" or "Roslindale has green spaces at all four corners" are used by some residents.
The scope of the area was redefined in the 1960s when the Boston Redevelopment Authority gave the section of Dorchester around Mattapan Square its own postal code in order to break the sprawling neighborhood of Dorchester into smaller areas.

The last Boston PCC holdouts are 11 cars which provide frequent service on the Mattapan High Speed Trolley Line, a three-mile double track run between Ashmont and Mattapan which was converted in 1929 from former New Haven Railroad (Old Colony) steam trackage displacing NH 4-4-0s and wooden coaches.

 MBTA Green Line: Signals
Typically found at the entrance to a station, and it means that the station is occupied by the proceeding car.
This was added as a safety measure some years ago following a rear-end collision; multiple cars have always been able to enter stations but this aspect adds an additional mandatory stop when the station is occupied.
The Light Rail Division also operates the Mattapan High Speed Line, which is an all-PCC operation.

Residents from all the surrounding neighborhoods attended the meeting and welcomed Barbara Boylan of the MBTA and John Stebbins from Cambridge Seven Architects as they explained that the current design is a series of outdoor rooms scaled to accomodate the station and the commuters using the station.
These two schemes wil be reviewed by the MBTA as a starting point for their revised design of the North plaza as well as taking into consideration the priority list created from last night's meeting.

The Future MBTA - Red Line
This could still be done with a station on Route 128 but another idea is to have the line head north and east to Burlington with a stop in North Lexington and Route 128.
Another early idea was to extend the Red Line from Ashmont to Mattapan and then make a loop by branching off after Broadway along the Fairmont CR line and connect at Mattapan.
The extra stations would be at Lake St. in East Arlington and Brattle St between Arlington Heights and the high school.

Dorchester Atheneum: New Depot, Mattapan Square
Perched on the banks of the Neponset River at entrance to the MBTA's trolley yard and terminal, the Mattapan Station building opened in 1856 and closed in late 1920s after which it was sold and converted to commercial use.
The steam railroad carried commuters from Mattapan and surrounding areas to the Old Colony Railroad's Boston terminal on Kneeland Street, and it was that terminus that created that whole business area around it.
In the late 1920s the New Haven RR sold the station to the Boston Elevated Railway Co., which abandoned the steam-powered service in favor of electric trolleys.
