Mattathias ben Johanan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Author of the Judean revolt against the Greco-Syrian empire [166 BCE] and patriarch of the Hasmonean dynasty of Judean rulers.
By birth Mattathias was a lesser priest of the line of Jehoiarib and the family of Hasmon.
After Antiochus IV pillaged the Temple and replaced Judean religious tradition with Greek worship and culture [167 CE], Mattathias led Judeans to rebel against Syrian domination.

What was special about Mattathias and his family, and also about Orthodox Christians, is the fact that God has chosen to join with us in covenant, to lift us up from the ranks of humanity in general and to bestow upon us a very unique bond with Himself.
Mattathias' challenge is to base our entire life, to found every action, and to trust at every moment solely in God.
While Mattathias' recitation of the deeds of the ancient Saints is a challenge to have unreserved trust in God, it also is a challenge to keep faith with those other covenant members who stand beside us now, who have lived before us, and those who will come after us under the covenant.

Judas Maccabeus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Judas Maccabeus (or Judah the Maccabee from the Hebrew יהודה המכבי transliteration: Yehudah HaMakabi) was the third son of the Jewish priest Mattathias.
However, a priest from Modiin, Mattathias, resisted assimilation and instigated a rebellion when he killed one of the emperor's officers.
Before the patriarch Mattathias died in 167 BCE, he bestowed upon his sons John, Simon Maccabaeus, Eleazar, and Jonathan Maccabaeus the task of continuing the holy war he had started — with Judas at their head as military chief.

In this verse Mattathias claims ancestry from Phinehas by noting that the contemporary High Priest, Simon II, is a descendant of Eleazar, son of Aaron and father of Phinehas, the ancestor of Zadok and the Oniads.
Although Simeon was third in the chain of command of the Mattathias' tribe (1Macc 13), he became the leader of the Maccabean uprising and senior to his brothers ("sound in judgment" as the leader in Isaiah 9:6).
Mattathias is buried in his ancestral tomb, and all Israel mourns him, in the same way it mourned the defiled sanctuary (1Macc 4:39), the death of Judas (1Macc 9:20) and the death of Jonathan (1Macc 13:26).

All the sons of Mattathias had now died for the sake of The Law ; and the result of their work, so valorously prosecuted for over thirty years, was a new-bOrn enthusiasm in Israel for the ancestral faith.

 The Maccabean Revolt
Mattathias, as a leader in the city, was commanded by the officers to be the first person to offer a sacrifice -- as an example to the rest of the people.
At this point Mattathias was overcome with a passionate zeal to defend his God, and he killed this Jewish man, as well as the officers of the king.
The aged priest Mattathias was much too old for such a rigorous lifestyle, however, and died in 166 BC just as the rebellion was gaining momentum.

Consequently, Mattathias and his sons fought the guerrilla war for three years until they were able to gain enough support to be a serious threat.

Mattathias declares, "Let everybody who is zealous for the law and stands by the covenant follow me" (I Maccabees 2:27).
The implication is that Mattathias derives his political and religious authority from this very act of zealotry, this taking of the law into his own hands, based on his perception that the continued existence of the Jewish community was in danger.
Although Mattathias saw himself as acting in a situation of conflict between an earthly power and the law of God, his act might be viewed from the outside as one of political terrorism; he had committed murder for the sake of what he perceived to be a greater good.
