The time of the latter is unknown (Matthew 24:36, 44), and the disciples are exhorted in various parables to live in readiness for it, a readiness that entails faithful attention to the duties of the interim period (Matthew 24:45-25:30).
Matthew's portrayal of Jesus in his passion combines both themajestic serenity of the obedient Son who goes his destined way in fulfillment of the scriptures (Matthew 26:52-54), confident of his ultimate vindication by God, and the depths of fear and abandonment that he feels in face of death (Matthew 26:38-39; 27:46).

However, it is to be noted that this speech lacks the customary concluding formula that follows the five discourses (see the note on Matthew 7:28), and that those discourses are all addressed either exclusively (Matthew 10;18;24;25) or primarily (Matthew 5-7;13) to the disciples, whereas this is addressed primarily to the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 13-36).

Leaving aside several details of the boy's illness, he concentrates on the need for faith, not so much on the part of the boy's father (as does Mark, for Matthew omits Mark 9:22b-24) but on that of his own disciples whose inability to drive out the demon is ascribed to their little faith (Matthew 17:20).
Since the Matthean Jesus normally chides his disciples for their little faith (as in Matthew 17:20), it would appear that the charge of lack of faith could not be made against them and that the reproach is addressed to unbelievers among the Jews.
However in Matthew 17:20b (if you have faith the size of a mustard seed), which is certainly addressed to the disciples, they appear to have not even the smallest faith; if they had, they would have been able to cure the boy.

Matthew - A Gospel for Messianic Jews
Matthew's task was to tease out new interpretations of the old scripture – wrenching his references completely out of context in fact – and juxtapositioning these 'quotations' with some pithy incident in the Jesus biography which he is fabricating.
Significantly, Matthew devotes rather fewer words to the fabulous resurrection than to rebutting the idea that the disciples had simply stolen the body – a tale obviously popular among the Jews when the fable was written ("This saying has been spread abroad among the Jews up to this very day" – 28.15).
Matthew groups the main body of his fable into five chunks of priestly instruction, each ending with the same formula – "Now when Jesus had finished these words..." (7.28;11.1;13.53;19.1.26.1).
