(in the womb) The Sandman #11; (born) The Sandman #22.
An infant for the majority of the Sandman series, Daniel is the son of Hippolyta 'Lyta' Hall and Hector Hall, borne for two years in the Dreaming, where the Halls were being held prisoner by Brute and Glob, two nightmares who had escaped during Dream's earthly exile (see Preludes and Nocturnes, The Doll's House).
Hector Hall was a perennial DC character, son of Carter Hall (the Golden Age Hawkman), and has assumed many guises during his stay in the DC Universe, and was at one point the Sandman, hence his inclusion.

So, we were talking on the phone one day, and he mentioned that he’d always wanted to do a film of Beowulf but hadn’t figured out how to get from, essentially, Act 2 to Act 3.
Stardust happened because Claudia Schiffer loves the books and Matthew Vaughn (her husband) walked off X-Men 3 because he didn’t think the script was ready and he felt like he wanted to make a film in the UK.
So I think those two things meant that he was very ready to do something fast and that was what he wanted to do.

 defective yeti: Books: American Gods
Although this is the first Gaiman novel I've read, I owned and enjoyed the entire run of Sandman back in the day.
I had no idea who he was, and watching a bunch of Goths fawn over him and ask fanboy questions didn't help much (not that I'm devoid of fanboy fawning myself, but if you're not privy to the source material, it just leaves an icky aftertaste).
American Gods was the first of Gaiman's prose works that I thought was even close to as good as Sandman.
