Matthew Kiprotich Birir (born July 2, 1972) is a former Kenyan athlete, winner of 3000 m steeplechase at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Born in Eldama Ravine, Kenya, Matthew Birir started running, when he attended at the famous St.
At the 1993 World Championships Birir was beaten to fourth by Italian Alessandro Lambruschini, who repeated this feat three years later at the 1996 Summer Olympics, so Birir had to settle again with fourth place.

The 24-year-old Kipsang is back with a bang and he beat Olympians Richard Limo and Matthew Birir who finished second and third in the senior men's 12-kilometres event during the Rift Valley cross-country championship held in Eldama Ravine town, in Koibatek district at the weekend.
Birir won a silver medal in the 3,000 metres steeplechase at the 1992 Barcelona, Olympic Games in Spain, while Limo was in Kenya's 5,000 metres squad at last year's Sydney Olympics.
By beating established athletes at the championship by more than 10 seconds, this former student of Metkei Secondary School in Keiyo district sent a strong signal that he is not about to fade into oblivion.

Linus Maiyo trailed in second (37:35) followed by Birir (38:17), as Barmasai dropped to sixth and Rotich eighth.
However, pride of place during the day went to 16-year-old Monica Wangare - an eighth grade pupil in a rural school in Nyahururu - one of Kenya's best high altitude training areas.
