Matthew Hale Carpenter, born Decatur Merritt Hammond Carpenter, (December 22, 1824- February 24, 1881) was a member of the Republican Party who served in the United States Senate for the state of Wisconsin from 1869- 1875 and again from 1879- 1881.
He served as District Attorney of Rock County, Wisconsin, from 1850- 1854.

Matthew Ritchie’s first appearance in the county was under an appointment from the State of Virginia in the year 1777, to tender the oath of allegiance to the people in the counties of Yohogania, Monongalia, and Ohio.
He purchased the “Washington lands” of Matthew Ritchie, and sold a portion, and the remainder was sold by his widow.
On the 24th of December, 1781, he was appointed sub-lieutenant of the county; elected representative in 1782, ’83, and ’84; justice of the Court of Common Pleas of the county in 1784; and on the 5th of December, 1789, was appointed with Presley Neville as deputy surveyor of a part of Washington County.

Carpenter attended the University of Virginia, worked as a chemical engineer during World War II as a requirement of the West Virginia draft board, and then pursued a doctorate at The University of Pittsburgh.
An important resource to the Museum, Carpenter was a member of The Aldrich’s Board of Trustees in the late 1970s and is a long-time resident of New Canaan, Connecticut.
Through the years, Carpenter’s approach to collecting was characterized by a sharp focus on new and emerging artists, frequent visits to New York’s art galleries, and important personal relationships with artists.

The building of the City Hall was also commenced in 1857; it was opened to the public on the evening of February 22, 1858, and was then thought to be a grand building.
It furnished to the Union army, 1 brigadier general (Lucius Fairchild), 9 colonels, 6 lieutenant-colonels, 5 majors, 10 captains, 12 lieutenants, and 9 non-commissioned officers and privates; besides 1 captain to the Confederate army (H. Bradford, of the Washington Battery, C. Artillery).
The martial spirit once stirred, it was not long before (July 12) a cavalry company was formed--at first bearing the name Dane County Dragoons, which was subsequently toned down to Dane Cavalry.

The newer "L" and "H" shields, denoting coverings of linen or hide, are much improved over their first attempts (though they seem to be inconsistent about the L, H, and W designations).

 Gregory, John Goadby, 1856-
There is a letter to Cramer from each of the following United States Senators: Matthew H. Carpenter, Timothy O. Howe, and John Sherman, and about a dozen to Gregory between the years 1894 and 1906 from John C. Spooner.
Among the fellow club members who corresponded with Gregory were sons or close relatives of several men who had been prominent in the history of Wisconsin: S. Booth of Chicago, Paul D. Carpenter of a Milwaukee law firm, George H. Paul writing from various places, and George R. Peck of Chicago.
In his youth he was a Democrat (His first wife, Caroline Strong Paul who died in 1891, was a sister of George H. Paul, a leading Wisconsin Democrat.), but the newspaper Gregory edited was a stronghold of Stalwart Republican principles and in the 1890s he became a Republican.
