Henry Matthews, 1st Viscount Llandaff (January 13, 1826 - April 3, 1913) was a British Conservative politician and statesman.
Born in Ceylon, where his father was a puisne judge of the Supreme Court there, Matthews was educated at the University of Paris, graduating in 1844, before going on to study at London University, from which he graduated successively BA and LLB.
Matthews was made a Queen's Counsel in 1868, shortly before he was elected Member of Parliament for Dungarvan.

Henry John Matthews was born on 19 September 1859 at Dunedin, New Zealand, the fourth surviving son and youngest child of George Matthews, a nurseryman, and his wife, Elizabeth Pressly.
Although Matthews did not publish his observations of these trips, he is credited with discovering several new species and contributing valuable information to the study of plant distributions.
Henry Matthews was selected by John McKenzie, commissioner of forests in the Seddon ministry, as a man capable of handling the practical problems of selecting land for the government nurseries and plantations, staffing and equipping them, and choosing the appropriate species, methods of propagation and planting techniques.

Lawrence Sully’s 1795 miniature of Henry, thought to be a life study, passed down in the Henry family and is now owned by the Mead Art Museum of Amherst College in Massachusetts.
In 1851 Thomas Sully painted a half-length portrait of Henry now owned by the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond; the Senate’s portrait by George Matthews is a copy of the Thomas Sully painting.
Matthews and Hughes apparently shared a studio; Hughes was reported to have “touched up” the Matthews portrait of Henry, making it more acceptable to a disinclined acquisition committee.

In this case, the first volume in the series, the author establishes the foundations of what may amount to a prolific collection.
As usual, what appears to be most noteworthy in this book is the deep knowledge that Matthews possesses of what he tells us about, as well as the presentation of numerous photos of that age.
We cannot fail to reccommend this book for all those fans of the history of aeronautics as well as those who are interested in the remote predecessors of our current space planes.

Henry IV the father is established so much more effectively than Henry IV the warrior and king, that the stakes never really seem high enough.
It's the perfect mix of traditional and groundbreaking, and is the one role that centers this Henry IV as both a new work and part of a much older tradition.
It's hard not to wish Matthews had been able to maintain a similar balance between his take on the show and Shakespeare's; his play might then be more wholly successful.

The conflation has its definite advantages, chiefly in bringing the Hal-Falstaff story to the close hinted at throughout "Henry IV, Part 1" but not dramatized until the end of the justifiably less-often-seen "Part 2." But the gains are outweighed here by the losses.
This is a "Henry IV" with a title character who isn't mere background decor.
