Reilly includes drawings to clarify the elements of the search, but most readers will be confused by the multitude and complexity of the clues.
I liked Reilly’s nifty gizmos, including a specially outfitted 747 that enables the Nine to make their escapes, and there are a few moments of sweet sentiment between Lily and her protectors.

Review - Contest by Matthew Reilly
Contest is Matthew Reilly’s first novel that he self-published after it was turned down by numerous Australian publishers.
As Matthew himself says, this story laid the foundations for Ice Station and the character Scarecrow…; and as such it is a very firm foundation indeed.
Ah, I hear you say, is this the same Matthew Reilly that did Ice Station, and yes, it is. This was his first novel and although it has been tweaked for this release, you can tell that it is one of his stories.

'''Matthew Reilly''', born July 2nd, 1974, is an Australian thriller writer.
Reilly is well known for his style of writing, which, unlike any other before it, focuses entirely on Hollywood-style action scenes, relegating drama and character development to second priority.
Many critics condemn this, and point out that Reilly unashamedly writes his books to read like movies; however, Reilly's fans argue that his writing style is what makes the books unique and exciting.

Matthew Reilly's Area 7 shows an even more concentrated skill at keeping us turning the pages than his previous bestsellers Ice Station and Temple.
Reilly's speciality is the steady accumulation of cliffhanging situations (as he demonstrated so readily in Temple) and he pulls off the trick with his usual aplomb in this one.

I have loved Matthew Reilly books since Contest, Ice Ststaion etc. Yes they were far fetched, but still on the very edge of beleiveable.

If you have read Reilly's previous books including the likes of Ice Station and Area 51, this is definitely a must-have, even if it is just for the milestones in certain characters' lives.
Personally, I found that one of the most appealing things about Reilly's books is the way that it is so easy to become engrossed in the characters.

As depressingly young as Matthew Reilly is, he set out to write stories with non-stop action and has more than succeeded!
The Ice Station is an extremely well though out, well researched bit of action which to my count, let me come up for air on only three occasions.
The only flaw in this nonstop thriller was Reilly constant use of italics to emphasise every key word or phrase that we might overlook in our hasty reading as the pace carries us along...

I seem to remember reading part of an interview with him that he wrote the really freaky action scenes in "Ice Station" *because* they were unlikely to be made by Hollywood...
As I was reading them I couldn't help thinking they were written whith the design to be made into movies...but that's just me, and I didn't think about it long enought to imagine the budget that would require and all that crap.
I reckon he should have given Scarecrow a Mark23 Mod0, but as absolutely no one has heard of that, it wouldn't have resulted in higher sales, having a deagle does that, as people have seen enough bad guys in films use it that they could spot one literally a mile away.
