Saad Muhammad's mother died when he was 5 years old, and he and his elder brother were sent to live with an aunt.
Saad Muhammad was taken in by Catholic Social Services, the nuns gave him the name Matthew Franklin (after the saint and the park where he was abandoned).
Saad Muhammad was also part of a group of world Light-Heavyweight champions who became Muslims and changed their names during his era as a Light-Heavyweight, the others being Eddie Mustafa Muhammad (Eddie Gregory), and Dwight Muhammad Qawi (Dwight Braxton).

Dwight Muhammad Qawi (born January 5, 1953 in Baltimore, Maryland,USA) is a former world boxing champion in the light-heavyweight and cruiserweight divisions.
The last of those wins came on September 5, 1981, when Braxton returned to Rahway to fight Scott, with the winner promised a shot at Matthew Saad Muhammad's WBC world championship belt.
The ex-convict was the underdog against Saad, one of the most popular fighters of his generation and a fellow Hall of Famer, but Braxton defeated him on a 10th-round technical knockout and became a world champion for the first time.

I almost put Yaqui-Saad in, but since Saad won both it just missed the cut, though the second was a great fight and the first was no slouch.
Muhammad vs. Marvin was another close call…probably should’ve been in, but all those damn 175ers from that era have names that start with “M”……that’s the best excuse I can offer.
