Released in the spring of 1995, 100% Fun received Sweet's strongest reviews to date and went gold on the strength of "Sick of Myself," his first single to scrape the bottom reaches of the pop charts.

In mainstream commercial terms there's some credence to that notion, but artistically, nothing could be further from the truth.
Though he began to slip underneath the radar sometime in the late '90s, Sweet never stopped releasing melodic pop gems, as 2004's LIVING THINGS bears out.Gone are Sweet's days of dirtying up his sweet tunes with chaotic lead guitar work from the likes of Richard Lloyd and Robert Quine.

 Ink 19 :: Matthew Sweet
On his 1999 album, In Reverse, Matthew Sweet has a song that seems to sum up what a lot of gifted pop singer-songwriters are going through these days in their battles with increasingly hit-oriented record companies.

Despite his own problems, Sweet remains cautiously optimistic that things will eventually turn around for pop singer-songwriters, and he believes the time may be ripe for some sort of revolution in the music industry.
