Bach, Cantatas ’ Matthias Goerne, November 16th 2002. (ME)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Goerne’s singing on this occasion, despite one or two uncharacteristically vague – sounding lines and a distressing mistake in the final work, was the model of what Bach singing should be, in its combination of reverent spirituality and vivid, masculine life.
The wonderful Arioso passage here called forth from Goerne some of his most radiantly poetic singing: ‘Komm, Liebe Braut’ was irresistible, and the final Aria ‘Dich hab ich je und je geliebet’ was the high point of the evening, with the bass repetitions of ‘Ich komme bald’ weaving mesmerizingly around the soprano and continuo lines.
It did take a while before things settled down; Goerne was naturally distressed, and it probably didn’t help that he must have been aware of just how much the audience felt for him.

Matthias Goerne's rendition of Schubert's Dichterliebe is moving and poignant, and at times achingly beautiful.
One seems to suggest that Goerne's voice has a muddy quality, which is as far off the mark as one could be; Goerne's voice is gorgeous, smooth, and rich without ever being muddy, and he sings with an ease that never turns sloppy or lazy.
I came rather late to Goerne's singing, this being only the second disc of his that I heard, and my impression was of a ravishingly beautiful voice overwhelmed by raucous, percussive, at times downright amateurish playing.

Goerne is joined in three duets ("Bei Mannern" from DIE ZAUBERFLOTE, "Crudel, perche finora" from FIGARO, and the WOZZECK scene) by soprano Dorothea Roschmann, whose sound isn't quite to my taste (it's a bit lacking in warmth) but who is as musical and as sensitive as her partner.
Matthias Goerne's "Arias" is an indispensable disc for admirers of German music, the baritone voice, or Goerne himself -- or for those who would just like to hear an interestingly programmed aria recital.

I have been through all the Songs, and there are really only a few which speak to me, but this repertoire is not to my taste, it is not deep enough – the music is brilliant, but that is not enough; for me, it is not really connected to anything.
Goerne’s most recent recording is of course another work much associated with his former teacher, Schubert’s ‘Die Schöne Müllerin,’ which forms the first part of his odyssey through the great Schubert cycles; he will record both ‘Winterreise’ and ‘Schwanengesang’ with Brendel during live performances at the Wigmore Hall next Autumn.

Baritone Matthias Goerne and pianist Alfred Brendel perform the crème of German song-cycles in this live recording.
The most notable aspects of this recording are Goerne's vocal consistency, indistinguishable in live performance from his work in the studio, and the inclusion of "Herbst," D. 945 (Autumn) as an extra song in Schwanengesang.
Schubert may very well have intended to group "Herbst" with the other Ludwig Rellstab poems that were eventually published as the first half of Schwanengesang, but even if that isn't the case, "Herbst" fits in perfectly with those robust, tuneful settings, and it is a charming song in its own right.

Now Matthias Goerne has done so, bringing his renowned warmth of tone, his beauty of line and lightly worn intelligence to what, for most of the audience, must have seemed familiar territory - except that this time a little musical cross-dressing was required.
If you live in Germany, the answer is apparently "yes": no impresario there has engaged Goerne for this programme, even though he is a renowned interpreter of German Lieder.
It didn't work for me. Goerne's musical qualities - his legato, his refreshingly non-declamatory sonorities - were much to the fore, but he seemed reluctant to act the words or probe the music's variety of expression.

Barnes & Noble.com Music - Schubert: Die schöne Müllerin -- Matthias Goerne - CD
In the case of "Die schöne Mullerin," everything depends on how convincing the singer is at portraying the miller: is he a figure of sympathy or ridicule, a character who is ironically disdained by his audience or who, for all his faults, is loved compassionately by his audience?
Although Goerne's finely shaded baritone may be a little too dark for the youthful miller, his command of every nuance of the role and his control of every aspect of his voice makes his recording almost a rival for Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's superb 1951 recording.
Goerne is an exceptional artist, and the familiar tale of the apprentice who falls in love with the miller's daughter takes on new poignancy and depth of feeling.

In a great performance, these 24 songs--most of them slow, two-thirds in minor keys--can be overwhelming and this one, recorded live at London's Wigmore Hall (with applause at the beginning and ovations at the end), must be one of the greatest.
Goerne's voice, famous for its incomparably pristine purity and velvety mellowness, is capable of an incredible variety of color, nuance and inflection; every note is infused with sustained expressiveness.
But Brendel's piano also sounds extraordinarily beautiful; together they almost literally paint images, moods and feelings--not in the usual sense of "word-painting," (though Goerne has a way with coloring specific words), but rather through their infinite, loving attention to subtle changes in harmony and melodic contours, their phrasing and rhythmic flexibility.

By including both of these in his latest recital, then, the baritone Matthias Goerne was clearly sending out a message, though its meaning was hard to define.
With that went any sense of the protagonist's vulnerability in Frauenliebe too, as well as much of the emotional charge of the Wesendonck Songs, which sounded so dogged it was hard to believe they were composed while Wagner was working on Tristan und Isolde.
Around the two cycles Goerne placed three late Schumann settings usually sung by a soprano and Berg's Four Songs Op 2, whose nocturnal images are at least plausibly androgynous.
