 Parts of EU constitution worth saving -German CDU
Matthias Wissmann, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) tipped in polls to win September’s general election, said the constitution in its current form was all but doomed.
Wissmann said such proposals included holding future meetings of EU leaders in public, more referendums on European policy issues and giving national parliaments a greater role in shaping EU legislation.
Germany has already ratified the treaty in a parliamentary vote and Wissmann said the ratification process should continue across the EU so that all countries had a chance to express their views on the charter.
