Matti Klinge's book Let Us Be Finns - Essays on History was first published in 1991 by the Otava Publishing Company of Helsinki and translated by Martha Gaber1Abrahamsen, Mary Lomas, Mirja Lavanne and David Morris.
Klinge has taken on a huge task in this small book when he attempts to piece together the many factors and influences which were present throughout the history of this northern region of the world.
I felt that the reader, perhaps because of Matti Klinge's undoubted knowledge of his subject, was given so much information in such a small amount of space, that the book became a little ponderous, and the joy of learning about these ingenious and hardy people almost disappeared beneath the sheer weight of words.

Internationalising the school   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
On a very general cultural basis Klinge suggests that Nordic people caresses a sense of nature, of one self being in the periphery of the European continent, of being hard working farmers, fighting a cold climate and making an existence out of next-to-nothing.
In the political sense Klinge suggests that although the political relations between the Nordic countries have shifted, the non-violent separation of the Union between Sweden and Norway was often understood as a final demonstration of the brotherhood between the Nordic countries.
Klinge explains: «What they have is bad conscience, brought on by the contrast between their own material good fortune and the terrible conditions under which the majority of humanity must live» (Ibid.p.60).

Helsinki's Senate Square — Virtual Finland
The cornerstone of modern Finland was laid in 1809 at the Porvoo Diet, where Czar Alexander proclaimed himself constitutional ruler of the new Grand Duchy and promised to maintain the faith and laws of the land.
The historian Matti Klinge has pointed out that Sweden ceded a mere conglomerate of provinces to Russia; the Porvoo Diet united them as a state, "raised to the rank of nations".
Ehrenström's task was, in accordance with the wishes of Czar Alexander, to rebuild the new capital in an unprecedentedly grand manner, "in order to show both Finns and the outside world that a new political unit, the Grand Duchy of Finland, had come into being", as historian Matti Klinge puts it.
