Several people in Mattur and Hosahalli villages say that in the past the swamiji was asked by Jayendra Saraswati to accept the role of the junior pontiff but he had declined.
Sri Jayendra Saraswathi is said to have arranged for the construction of an ashram for the swamiji at a cost of Rs 4 lakh on the outskirts of Mattur village on the banks of the Tunga river.

Mattur village is well on its way to becoming the first Sanskrit speaking village in Karnataka.
Mattur's history is full of accounts of a Vijayanagar emperor giving the village as a gift to a group of Vedic scholars who were committed to preserving the traditions of Vedic literature, music and arts.
With time, Mattur's residents too fell victim to the times and their knowledge of Sanskrit lay neglected to be broken by only the occasional Poojas or wedding.

There is a village, named Mattur, which lies a few kilometers away from the city of Shimoga in Karnataka, the IT hub of India.
Situated on the banks of the Tunga river, the aesthetically pleasing sight of the blue river is offset by the emerald green orchards of arecanut palms which surround the village like a shimmering fringe.
But it is not the unique spectacle of Mattur, which I am bringing through words to those readers, who might have seen a parallel description of an Indian village in the British museum.

Historically, the natives of this village are settlers from Sankote located in Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border and had made Mattur their home since almost five centuries ago following a largesse sanctioned by Krishnadevaraya, the emperor of Vijayanagara in 1509-30.
So moved was the swamiji at the sight of Mattur's tranquil and pleasant ambience that he gave a clarion call to develop it as a model 'Sanskrit village'.
