cactus-books.com: The Genus Matucana, Biology and Systematics of Fascinating Peruvian Cacti by Rob Bregman
As a result of the thorough search for cacti during the last decades, the number of genera, species and varieties has increased considerably, creating a need for specialised literature.
The Peruvian genus Matucana (including the former genera Submatucana and Eomatucana) represents a popular group of plants, of which collections are widespread, but over which little information exists.
All are described and depicted by colour plates, drawings of the flower and SEM micrographs of the seed.

3) - The genus Matucana established by Britton and Rose 1922 was until 50-ties very little known.
Taxonomical speculation and various schemes but are less inportant for hobby-collectors and they sought for names, locality datas etc. Matucana and other genera from Borzicactinae are extremely variable in native and under cultivation conditions are ever more plastic.
Matucana is indeed related to Borzicactus, Arequipa, Loxanthocereus etc., but lumping them all together as suggast Kimnach et Hutchinson (1957) and consequently J. Donald is less convenient for common cactophile.

Matucanas come from Peru, some from the lower valleys, and some form high up in the mountains.
You can therefore imagine that the growing requirements vary considerably from species to species.
It is the flowers that identify them (Not completely uniquely however as Borzicactus also have similar flowers), having strange Bi Laterally symetrical flowers.
