It completes the preservation of a unique sequence of habitats from indigenous forest on land to fresh-and-salt-water wetlands, mangrove forest, intertidal mudflats rich in wading birds and mussel beds, and the finally deep water marine environments of the Tamaki Straits.

Te Matuku was an early European settlement site, and graves of some of the early settlers are preserved in the Te Matuku Bay cemetery.

Some time ago, a friend from New Zealand told me that the term originated there and was inspired by a local fish called the Matuku.
I will leave it to the reader to determine which to use.
