In Islam, a Maturidi is one who follows Abu Mansur Al Maturidi's theology, which is a close variant of Ash'ari school of thought and the codifying of the beliefs of traditional Sunni Islam as practiced since the time of the Prophet Muhammad.
The Maturidis, Asharis and Atharis are all part of the majority of Muslims, the Sunnis.
The Maturidis state that belief (iman) does not increase nor decrease but remains static; it is piety (taqwa) which increases and decreases.

The Maturidi school of theology gradually came to prevail among the Hanafite communities everywhere.

The three architects of Turk-Islamic thought are Maturidi, Farabi and Yesevi and they all converge on mysticism in their approach to the “God-human relationship”.
Maturidi desired to accomplish this aim by relying upon the method of Ebu Hanife, and he wrote two books, “Tevhid” on theological philosophy and the use of reason in religion and “Tevilat” on theological explanation of Quran, and through reason the belief system.
According to Maturidi, the role and importance of evidence in religion cannot be avoided because superiority and rightness of religion can be comprehended not by “imagination” but by evidence.

As the reliance of the traveller says, the ashari and maturidi schools of thoughts differ in a mere 6 questions- so as far as we are concerned they are the same really.

In sharp contrast, van Ess suggests that the passages cited by Maturidi are derived from the Zumurrud;(32) and he further implies that the Zumurrud was written in the form of a dialogue in which al-Warraq presented arguments against the existence of prophecy, while Ibn al- Rawandi presented arguments in its favor.
Both the Majalis Muayyadiyya and Maturidi thus show that Ibn al-Rawandi, the author of the Zumurrud, presented in it the views of the proponents of prophecy, whereas the role of the speaker who denies the existence of prophecy was taken by al-Warraq.
Maturidi's book is also the source which most clearly shows the role of Abu Isa al-Warraq in the Zumurrud as well as his Manichaean beliefs.

The historical proof for rational argument -- unmentioned in kalam literature but perhaps even more cogent than either of the Qur’anic proofs just mentioned -- is that nothing else could meet the crisis that Ash‘ari and Maturidi faced; namely, the heretical mistakes of the two early proto-schools of ‘aqida, the Jahmiyya and the Mu‘tazila.

The Ash‘ari school and Maturidi schools have represented the ‘aqida or "tenets of belief" of the majority of Sunni Muslims for more than a thousand years; just as the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi‘i, and Hanbali schools have represented the shari‘a or "Sacred Law" for the majority of Sunni Muslims for this period.
In the past, such contraventions, aside from Mu‘tazilites, Shiites, and purely sectarian movements, were confined to a handful of mainly Hanbalis, whose bone of contention with the two traditional schools was that neither had anything to do with their literalist, anthropomorphic understanding of Allah Most High, which they promoted by all means at their disposal.

On the question of free will, Sunni orthodoxy attempted a synthesis between man's responsibility and God's omnipotence.
The Sunni formulation, however, as presented by al- Ash'ari and al- Maturidi, Sunni's two main representatives in the 10th century, shows palpable differences despite basic uniformity.
Al-Ash'ari taught that human acts were created by God and acquired by man and that human responsibility depended on this acquisition.
