Maturity onset diabetes of the young - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) refers to any of several rare hereditary forms of diabetes mellitus due to dominantly inherited defects of insulin secretion.
Standard diabetes treatments (insulin for type 1 and gestational diabetes, and oral hypoglycemic agents for type 2 are often initiated before the doctor suspects a more unusual form of diabetes.
The strongest candidate for inclusion as a new form of monogenic diabetes is the neonatal diabetes caused by activating mutations of the KCNJ11 gene, which codes for the Kir6.2 subunit of the beta cell K

 Maturity Onset Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus comes in two forms, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM also known as juvenile onset of Type 1 diabetes mellitus) and non-insulin dependant diabetes mellitus (NIDDM also know as adult or maturity onset or Type II diabetes mellitus).
Since diabetics are prone to hypertension, they should limit their salt intake to one teaspoon a day, including any salt in processed foods (for a total of 2000 milligrams of sodium).
The American Diabetes Association recommends 10-to-20 percent of their calories as protein because most diabetics are already on a low calorie diet and some of the protein will be used for energy, but individuals with diabetes and kidney disease should eat only 0.75-to-0.8 gram of protein per kilogram of ideal body weight.

Familial Clustering of Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM)
The age-corrected relative risk of type II DM for the offspring of diabetic parents was found to be progressively increasing from a nonconsanguineous diabetic father (22%) or mother (26.5%), to non-consanguineous conjugal diabetic parents (27%) and to the offspring of consanguineous single or conjugal diabetic parents (37.5%).
Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) was suspected in 10 probands (5%), and early-onset type II DM in the offspring of conjugal diabetic parents in 16 probands (9%).
Diabetic nephropathy was diagnosed by measuring concentration of urinary albumin (mg/L) and creatinine (g/L) in 24-hour urine and calculating urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (mg/g), in the absence of urinary tract infection.

eMedicine - Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2 : Article Excerpt by: William L Isley, MD
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a group of disorders characterized by hyperglycemia and associated with microvascular (ie, retinal, renal, possibly neuropathic), macrovascular (ie, coronary, peripheral vascular), and neuropathic (ie, autonomic, peripheral) complications.
The genetics of type 2 diabetes are complex and not completely understood, but presumably this disease is related to multiple genes (with the exception of maturity-onset diabetes of the young [MODY]).
MODY is associated with autosomal dominant inheritance and is characterized by onset in at least 1 family member younger than 25 years, correction of fasting hyperglycemia without insulin for at least 2 years, and absence of ketosis.

children with DIABETES - Diabetes Dictionary: M
A form of diabetes characterised by early age of onset (usually less than 25 years of age), autosomal dominant inheritance (that is, it is inherited by 50% of a parent's children) with diabetes in at least 2 generations of the patient's family.
MODY diabetes that can often be controlled with meal planning or diabetes pills, at least in the early stages of diabetes.
It differs from type 2 diabetes in that patients have a defect in insulin secretion or glucose metabolism, and are not resistant to insulin.

Diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of nontraumatic lower extremity amputations in the US, with a 15- to 40-fold increase in risk compared to the nondiabetic population.
Unlike type 1 diabetes mellitus, in which microalbuminuria is a good indicator of early kidney damage, microalbuminuria is a common finding (even at diagnosis) in type 2 diabetes mellitus and is a strong risk factor for macrovascular (especially coronary heart) disease.

Diabetes Self-Management - Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young
A type of diabetes associated with single genetic defects that lead to impaired functioning of the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas.
Most cases of Type 1 diabetes are believed to be caused by an autoimmune reaction in which the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas are destroyed.
Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, usually starts with insulin resistance, or the reduced uptake of glucose by muscle and fat cells even when insulin is present.

eMedicine - Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2 - A Review : Article by Scott R Votey, MD
Distinguishing the type of diabetes can be difficult in (1) patients who are treated with insulin and are young but clinically appear to have type 2 diabetes and (2) older patients with late onset of diabetes who nonetheless take insulin and seem to share characteristics of patients with type 1 diabetes.
In diabetic third-nerve palsy, the pupil is usually spared, whereas in third-nerve palsy due to intracranial aneurysm or tumor, the pupil is affected in 80-90% of cases.
Another pitfall is underestimation of the severity of diabetic retinopathy on funduscopic examination because of failure to dilate the pupils or the failure to urgently refer a patient with lesions near the macula to an ophthalmologist.

Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) is a rare, genetic form of diabetes accounting for one per cent of diabetes (twenty thousand people) in the UK, although it often goes unrecognised.
It is familial and is characterised by a young age of onset (often diagnosed under twenty-five years of age) and non-insulin dependent diabetes.
It runs in families as the diabetes is caused by a change in a single gene which may be inherited from an affected parent.

Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) is a group of diabetes disorders that affects about 2% of people with diabetes.
Diabetes presents at a young age, usually less than 25 years of age.

Definition of Maturity onset diabetes of the young
Maturity onset diabetes of the young: Diabetes mellitus that has early onset (usually before the age of 25), is non-insulin-dependent, and is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.
MODY is often considered a subtype of type 2 diabetes but it is unlike the usual type 2 diabetes in that insulin secretion, not the action of insulin, is impaired.
