The mineral was, however, compared with known maucherite from other localities and with niccolite and maucherite prepared synthetically by fusing known mixtures of nickel and arsenic.
Maucherite thus formed was similar to the material from Alistos, both as to physical properties and the manner in which it occurs within niccolite.
Its association with niccolite and maucherite is hypogene and it is probably also hypogene in the millerite ore. Millerite is usually supergene (4) but the possibility of hypogene origin has been recognized (2), and pentlandite may be supergene at times although no entirely satisfactory evidence has been presented for this belief (5).

The godlevskite/pentlandite crystals occur disseminated along with maucherite, millerite, clinochlore and chromite in a pale green, massive, fine-grained granular intergrowth of grossular and diopside impregnated with calcite.
The maucherite occurs as single crystals and crystal clusters to 1 mm associated with green grossular, diopside and millerite in calcite; the crystals are revealed by etching the enclosing calcite.
The maucherite crystals are heavily striated perpendicular to the c axis due to oscillatory growth between the dipyramidal forms and the pinacoid.

Niccolite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Owing to its copper-red color the mineral is commonly called "copper-nickel," the German equivalent of which, Kupfernickel, was used as early as 1694.
Associated minerals include: arsenopyrite, barite, silver, cobaltite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, breithauptite and maucherite.
Niccolite alters to annabergite (a coating of green nickel arsenate) on exposure to moist air.

maucherite A tetragonal mineral, Ni 11 As 8 ; forms tabular crystals; occurs in nickel-cobalt-native- silver ore deposits.

It retains the small, old label of mineralogist and specimen dealer of Munich, (1859-1930), after whom maucherite is named.

The β-domeykite is usually intermixed with α-domeykite; however, a sample collected and kindly donated by G. Kullerud from the adjacent Seneca shaft consists essentially of β-domeykite.
Maucherite was not encountered, but it occurs in some fissures at other locations in the Keweenaw Peninsula, usually with algodonite (R. Skinner, pers comm.).
The reniform appearance of the rammelsbergite as well as the existence of tree-like fractures filled with α-domeykite lead to the conclusion that the nickel arsenides were emplaced earlier in more or less open cavities which were later invaded by copper arsenides.

Locally present are maucherite, sphalerite, bornite, talnakhite, mackinawite, and an unknown Cu-sulfide ("Cp").
Generally, the drill holes that contain the anomalous PGE values also contain the native silver-bearing maucherite; whereas, homogeneous maucherite is more characteristic of drill holes with little to no anomalous PGE values.
This suggests that PGEs were scavenged from the sulfide melt by early-formed maucherite, and thus the PGEs are related to a primary (magmatic) process.

Ore minerals are dominated by chalcopyrite and bornite with small amounts of pentlandite, millerite, siegenite, linnaeite, violarite, gersdorffite maucherite and nickeline.
The PGE are dominated by sperrylite, whose euhedral crystals contain small inclusions of maucherite, arsenopyrite, and chalcopyrite.
In case sperrylite intergrows with chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite, the latter to a varying degree undergo oxidation to goethite and scorodite.

Platinum-group minerals in the Raglan Ni-Cu-(PGE) sulfide deposit, Cape Smith, Quebec, Canad
A notable proportion of the PGM is associated either with carbonate, 13% by area within Zone 2, or with maucherite (nickel arsenide), 9% by area at Katiniq.
At Katiniq, sudburyite is associated with maucherite, and Pd occurs in solid solution within the maucherite grains, both minerals likely to have been produced as a result of postmagmatic alteration.
The morphology of the PGM has been extensively modified during this low-temperature alteration, with sperrylite crystals losing their euhedral form where parts of the crystal are in contact with altered silicates.

The platinum-group minerals in the upper section of the Keivitsansarvi Ni-Cu-PGE deposit, northern Finland
Sulfides consist of intergranular, highly disseminated aggregates mainly made up of pentlandite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite (all showing fine intergrowths), as well as nickeline, maucherite and gersdorffite in some samples.
This discrepancy results from the fact that a major part of Pd is hidden in solid solution in the structure of gersdorffite, nickeline, maucherite and pentlandite.
The mineral assemblages and textures of the upper section of the Keivitsansarvi deposit result from the combined effect of serpentinization, hydrothermal alteration and metamorphism of pre-existing, low-grade disseminated Ni–Cu ore formed by the intercumulus crystallization of a small fraction of immiscible sulfide melt.

A radiating aggregate of niccolite (pink-brown, left) has a thin maucherite (blue-grey, left) rim.
Native silver (white, centre) appears to be overgrowing the arsenides.
The blue-grey colour of maucherite is due to the very high reflectance of native silver.

The globules are interpreted as droplets of an immiscible arsenide melt with a composition close to that of maucherite - nickeline, suspended in the sulfide melt.
The model considers that the early cyrstallization of chromite collected most Os, Ir and Ru, while gold and the remaining PGE were partitioned into an immiscible arsenide melt leaving a sulfide melt depleted in PGE and Au.
Thus, although chromite - Ni arsenide ores show higher PGE (0.9-5 ppm) and Au (3-18 ppm) contents than sulfide - graphite ores (0.18-0.42 ppm PGE and 0.03-0.07 ppm Au), sulfide ores containing arsenide globules of aproximate maucherite composition display intermediate noble metals abundances (0.6-1.07 ppm PGE and 0.07-0.45 ppm Au).

We surmise that maximum temperatures in the listwaenite bodies during the Tertiary were less than 65¼C based on the studies of the Rusayl Formation (see above).
Stanger (1985) estimated that the formation of niccolite and maucherite in the altered ophiolite occurred at a temperature of 40 - 45
This conclusion was based, however, on extrapolation of experimental data from 200¼C and furthermore, there is textural evidence of disequilibrium between the two minerals (Stanger, 1985).

 Rammelsbergite and Algondite, Michigan
Several occurrences of copper and nickel arsenides in the Michigan copper district have been brought to light and studied by various workers within the past year.
Species such as rammelsbergite, pararammelsbergite, niccolite and maucherite have been reported along with new finds of domeykite and algodonite.
Unusual among these finds has been the discovery of crystals of rammelsbergite and algodonite.
