Maud Island Frog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Maud Island frog (Leiopelma pakeka) is a New Zealand primitive frog, one of only four belonging to the ancient family Leiopelmatidae and found only on two islands in the Marlborough Sounds area at the north of the South Island of New Zealand - Maud Island and Motuara Island.
Maud Island frogs live in burrows under boulders and are very dependent on a damp environment, and quickly dry out and die if placed in a dry place.
Apart from their rarity Maud Island frogs are hard to locate as they are well camouflaged, live underground, are nocturnal, and do not croak.

As soon as the Maud Island frog (currently one of two populations of Hamilton’s frog) is formally described as a new species, Hamilton’s frog on Stephens Island will be left with a population of only 200-300 individuals restricted to an area the size of a small suburban section.
The Maud Island frog is much more common than its relatives on Stephens Island, and is estimated to have a population of around 19,000.
On Maud Island, the frogs, although numerically strong, are susceptible to mammalian invasion from the adjacent mainland – stoats in particular regularly arrive and have to be removed – and also fire.
