The winner of the 2005 DFS Classic, one of the most prestigious women’s grass court tennis events on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, will hold aloft the oldest and most historic woman’s tennis trophy, originally won at Wimbledon.
The trophy was originally won at the All England Club in 1884 and 1885 by Maud Watson of Berkswell (the first Wimbledon ladies’ singles champion), who later presented it to the Edgbaston Club in 1934.
When the club was chosen in 1982 to host the pre Wimbledon women’s grasscourt tournament, it was thought fitting to use the ‘Maud Watson Trophy’ as its prize.
