Maui is part of the State of Hawaii and is the largest island in Maui County.
Maui is a volcanic doublet: an island formed from two volcanic mountains that abut one another to form the isthmus between them.
Maui is a leading whale-watching center in the Hawaiian Islands due to the fact that many Humpback whales winter in the sheltered Hawaiian islands channels between the islands of Maui county.

In the county the population was spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 30.90% from 25 to 44, 24.40% from 45 to 64, and 11.40% who were 65 years of age or older.

WAILUKU – Maui County Personnel Director Lynn Krieg said last week she has told her staff to disregard the state law requiring applicants for state and county government jobs to be current residents of the state.
Maui County was not involved directly in a federal court lawsuit, on which U.S. District Judge David Ezra granted an injunction to bar the state from enforcing the residency requirement in hiring.
In any case, she said, the Maui County Department of Personnel Services already had waived the residency restriction on a number of county jobs that were considered shortage positions.

The County argues that a two-year statute of limitations applies under RLUIPA and that the United States' suit was not filed within two years of the denial of the special use permit (as alleged in the complaint) that led to this suit.
Maui County also asserts that by bringing this suit under RLUIPA, the federal government violates the Tenth Amendment because it intrudes in an area of traditional local concern, i.e., the federal government has no power here to act in an area reserved for the states.
Maui County, and its amici, also argue that Congress violated the Commerce Clause because there is no substantial effect on interstate commerce.
