Karwaan-e-Aligarh: Maulana Khawaja Altaf Hussain Hali   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
Khwaja Altaf Hussain Hali, one of the greatest social reformers of India was born in Panipat in 1837, Altaf Hussain was educated in the same city and later went to Delhi where he wished to gain further education in the Indo-Islamic poetic tradition.
Hali was the first major poet to put forward “the theory that literature should be harnessed into the service of the community, and made to advance the cause of social welfare and betterment.” His poems brought back to life the society of their time far better than any scholarly construction could.
Maulana Hali's ghazals reflect his command over the form of poetry but later on in life, he focused more on nazm as a means of expression.

Maulana Maududi´s virtual indifference to the spiritual side of Islam meant that this vital element was conspicuously low in his movement from the beginning, and, in our opinion, it was this very shortcoming which later proved instrumental in the degeneration of the Jama´at from an ideal Islamic revivalist movement to a mere political party.
As far as Maulana Maududi´s mind is concerned, it is quite clear from one of his letters which was written to Maulvi Muhammad Younis in March 1941, that he was fully aware of the significance of the institution of bai´yah as the basis of organization.
However, since Maulana Maududi himself was inclined towards the system of bai´yah, this contradiction in the Jama´at´s organizational structure led to a continuos tension for a period of 15 years, ultimately erupting in the crisis of 1956-57 and causing a great deal of damage to the whole movement.

As Hali's verses prove, the religious leaders of that period could not spare the time to pay attention to a new philosophical outlook on Islam.

This impelled Maulana Shibli, a great scholar of that period, to write a poem in which he depicts the thinking of these scholars beautifully.
