The dangers of the area surrounding Maulbronn are depicted on a foundation plaque, consisting of two sidepieces similar to an altar.
To this very day, the legend lives on in the name of the town (Maulbronn literally meaning "mule fountain"), the coat of arms of the town and the etching of the mule drinking from the water in the arched vault of the fountain house.
The intelligent designs, hard-work and skilled tradesmanship of the Cistercian monks in Maulbronn enabled the monastery, which was in the care of the Bishop of Speyer, to grow rapidly.
