If a lady or gentleman is willing to marry, but not engaged, a ring should be worn on the index finger of the left hand; if engaged, on the second finger; if married, on the third finger; but if either has no desire to marry, on the little finger.
The woman who had the ring could issue commands as her husband, and was in every respect his representative.

The great circle of Maumbury Rings was the original stadium or coliseum of the Roman town; the tiers of seats when filled are estimated to have held over twelve thousand spectators.
In digging the foundations of the brewery near by, a subway was found leading toward the circus, which may have been used by the wild beasts and their keepers in passing from and to their quarters.

At Maumbury Rings, Dorset, a series of circular shafts some 0.9m in diameter and up to 6.5m deep had been dug at intervals in the bottom of the ditch.
Single rings of posts, post rings, have been recorded at three sites in England, the most well-known being that at Arminghall, Norfolk, where there were eight large timbers set in a horseshoe formation with the open side directly in line with the entranceway into the monument.
At Maumbury Rings, for example the henge was remodelled as an amphitheatre in Roman times and later as a Civil War fort, while at Thwing, Humberside, the site became a defended settlement in late Bronze Age times.

Henge - Stone Circle - Crystalinks
Given the defensive impracticalities of an enclosure with an external bank and internal ditch (rather than vice versa), henges are considered to have served a ritual purpose, perhaps built with intention of shielding what went on inside the enclosure from the outside world.
Nor should they be confused with earlier rings, such as the Goseck circle in Saxony-Anhalt, that may have served similar religious/calendrical/astronomical purposes, though at a much earlier epoch.
Archaeological evidence, coupled with information from astronomers, geologists and mathematicians, implies that the purpose of stone circles was connected with prehistoric peoples' beliefs and that their construction can shed light on ancient engineering, social organisation, religion and, for want of a better word, science.

 Chester Amphitheatre Project
A little under half of the Chester amphitheatre has been excavated, consolidated and displayed; as such it is the largest Roman monument currently visible in Chester (except for the north wall of the fortress).
Although it has frequently been described as the largest amphitheatre in Britain, the example at Maumbury Rings, Dorchester, measures 105.2 by 101.2 m externally, and is therefore some 28% larger than Chester (Collingwood and Richmond 1969, 119).
The comparisons given by Fulford (1989, 188), which appear to show Chester and Maumbury Rings as of equal size, are based on the area of the arena: at Chester, the arena is disproportionately large.

Though most often the crime was witchcraft, in other words, activities that threatened the pre-eminence of the Christian God, any crime by a woman against a man was considered worthy of great public spectacle as evidenced by the gathering of ten thousand to watch the new mother, Mary Channing, hanged by the neck until dead.
