Often incorrectly called The Maungatuas or The Maungatua Range, Maungatua is a prominent ridge which dominates the skyline of the Taieri Plains in Otago, New Zealand.
On the submit of Maungatua there are swamps that contain species of insect eating plants called sundews.
At the base of Maungatua glowworms may be found living in manuka trees.

On the slopes an at the foot of a large hill called Maungatua, on the western side of the plain, is a very extensive bush, and there is another smaller one on the sides of the hills of the eastern range, near the Maori settlement on the Taieri river.
On the western side of the plain is a tract of good and fertile land, at the foot of the Maungatua hill.
At the upper or northern end, there are considerable portions of dry and fertile land; but the middle and southern parts are, for the greater part, a vast, deep, and impassable swamp, beyond the means of colonial wealth and enterprise to reclaim or drain.

The plains cover an area of some 300 square kilometres, with a maximum extent of 30 kilometres.
The floodplains of the Taieri and Waipori Rivers, the plains are enclosed to the west by the Maungatua and Silverpeaks Ranges, and to the south and east by a low range of coastal hills.
Dairy and sheep farming dominate the agriculture of the plains, although deer is starting to have an economic impact.
